FF-bottle warming?

In the hospital when they started us supplementing they told us to use the nursery water at room temp. Now we exclusively FF and we have just kept doing this. He seems fine with it at room temp but people keep asking me why I don't warm the bottles? Should I be? Will this make him feel more full or satisfied? Is this something good to do at night to aide in sleeping? He eats 4oz every 3-4 hrs normally, but lately has been eating 4 oz every 2-3! Should I try warming the bottle to see if he's satisfied longer? He won't eat more at a time, he's just increased his feedings. Also, how old does a baby need to be to start having a little rice cereal? Our parents/grandparents/friends keep saying "he eats a lot! if you give him a little rice cereal he'll sleep longer through the night." Thanks!

Re: FF-bottle warming?

  • You do not have to warm the bottle. We only do it after bathtime b/c it seems to calm and further relax our LO at that time. I'm sure we could give her room temp just like we do during the day, but it's just my preference.

  • Oh and I'm not telling you what to do with your baby, but you don't have to give him rice cereal either. He may be going through a growth spurt which explains the more frequent feedings. I don't know what brand you use, but you could try the Enfamil Restfull formula at night which contains rice starch so he can feel fuller longer.

  • We just serve bottles at room temp.
  • I didn't want to get started using warmed bottles because if we're out and LO wants to eat how am I going to warm the bottles? It seems like an unnecessary step. @ the hospital they gave us the RTF bottles at room temp.
  • thank you for the input, I think we're doing fine with the room temp, it would be more inconvenient to warm, so good to know what I'm doing is right...but maybe I'll try warming the bottle just before bedtime to calm him, as you said. I'm going to ask the Dr. on Friday about the restfull, sounds like a good idea. I had previously asked about it when the baby was a week old and was told to wait, but now we're at 1 month, so maybe the Dr. will allow it? Maybe you're right about the growth spurt- he's already 10 lbs, but he just eats so ravenously! We were using the gentlease and switched to the regular premium lipil and he seemed satisfied, only eating 3 oz. but it only lasted a day or two. thanks again!
  • My guy takes his formula straight from the fridge.  Life is much easier that way.  I've heard the rice cereal making them sleep longer thing is a myth.  Ask your ped.  Mine didn't want my first to have anything but formula until 6 months.
