Prevacid?

So, my 1 month old DS has reflux.  He's been on zantac for over a week and it isn't helping... now we're starting prevacid.  Does anyone have any experience with it?  Did it work quickly?  Was it hard to get LO to take it ? - (My dr says it tastes horrible).

 Thanks!

  • Sorry about all the messages above - computer must have freaked out.

Anyway, I think it does taste bad, because it was a little difficult to get DD to take it at first.  My best advice is to aim the syringe toward baby's top back molars - that way it stays away from the tongue.  Also,  maybe this is mean, but to get her to swallow, you can gently blow in her face (it's a reflex).

  • We dissolve it and squirt the mixture into a nipple when DS is really hungry before he eats.  He sucks it right down!  We used to use the syringe to give it to him, but sometimes he would choke or spit some of it out.  Also, don't stop giving your LO zantac when you start the prevacid.  It takes about a week for prevacid to work.  So continue to give the zantac for a few days while the prevacid gets into their system.
  • It took us about 3 weeks to notice a difference.

DD takes it with no problems.  We use the dissolvable tablets - I put the pill in a syringe, draw up 4ccs of nursery water, and let it dissolve.  It is really easy to give.

My Pedi didn't want K to be on both at the same time.

Please talk to your doctor before doing this.

  • Yea, my pedi said it was ok to take both today since he had already taken the zantac this morning, but not to give him both in the future.

Thanks for all the advice!  I hope this helps him feel better!

  • DS took it four years ago.  Seems like they have a liquid form now?  His was a small little tablet I would have to dissolve it in a little water (tsp) or so.  It wasn't bad at all very easy to give.  I have LO on Zantac and this seems a little harder to give and I don't think it tastes good at all.
