Baby Names

Ayelet

Yes, it's an actual name and it's Hebrew. Pronounced eye-uh-LET (kinda rhymes with Violet) as far as I can tell, however I've never heard anyone actually say the name. It means gazelle of the dawn or morning star. I know that it would likely be mispronounced quite a bit, but there is just something so poetic about it to me. I just don't know if I would really have the balls to use it. If hubs and I were to actually use it, I would likely also use the nn Aya (eye-uh) Thoughts?

Re: Ayelet

  • It makes me think of the writer Ayelet Waldman, who also happens to be the wife of writer Michael Chabon.

I would identify the bearer of this name as being culturally Jewish, as Waldman is. I know there are tons of Hebrew names that are used by non-Jews, but this doesn't feel like one of them. I have no idea what your background is, just telling you my first impression.

  • Even though it has a pretty ring to it when you say it out loud, it brings a couple of things to mind to me, when I see it written down:

    1. The "Aye" just makes me think "aye, aye, Captain.".

    2. Eyelet lace

    3. Islet - a small island.

I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

In a different order, but this!

Also, considering all the weird, made up names we see, the fact that it's a real name makes me say go for it. Sure it's different...might be the actual unique some people go for. She's be the only one in her class, and it's an A name which appeals to me. I'd want to know her name story, so if you don't mind telling it over and over again, keep it on your list.

  • It is pronounced eye - EHL - et (with the accent on the second syllable).  It doesn't sound like violet at all.  I would assume your child is Israeli, but if you live in area with people who don't know any Israelis that probably won't be a problem.

Interesting. This is where I got the pronounciation from https://appellationmountain.net/2008/09/27/name-of-the-day-ayelet/

  • The correct pronunciation for this, with the emphasis on the second syllable is a little awkward for me--I think it would be mispronounced "eyelet" fairly often. If that would bother you, then I don't think you should use it.

I do however know a little girl named Eyelet (yes, after the lace) and I think the name is really pretty, if a bit different. I think Ayelet is beautiful, too, but I don't think you'll have good luck getting the correct pronunciation in areas that do not have large Israeli or Jewish populations.

  • hmmmmm when I first glanced at the name, I made a funny face... but after a couple minutes, it's grown on me and I think it's quite beautiful. I'm sure it will, as you mentioned, be mispronounced frequently, but if you love it and it means something to you, go for it.

The essay says that they are taking liberties with the pronunciation. Although I will make a correction of my transliteration.  Ah-YEL-et is really more accurate.

But you're not Israeli and you don't speak Hebrew, so I don't see any reason why you can't Anglicize the pronunciation and have it rhyme with violet.
