Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Scheduling

We have been loosely following Babywise and the EASY method.. or at least trying to! LO has been on a feeding schedule of 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm 7pm and then usually 11/12pm and 3/4am. Last night, he woke up around 1am for his night feeding instead of the usual 11 or 12. Then, he slept again until 5:30 when he broke out of the swaddle. I put him back together and he slept until 6:30am when he was definitely hungry. My question is, should we have woken him at 11 or 12 for his feeding or is it right to let him go as long as he can in the night? I'd love to get him to drop that late night feeding and sleep through to 7am.

Re: Scheduling

  • You shouldn't be scheduling a newborn.  Period.

  • I agree, newborns shouldn't be on a shedule and you need to feed on demand because that's when they are hungry & if they are sleeping through a time where they usually eat then, let them sleep. You should only wake to feed if they haven't reached their birth weight..
  • your baby is 3 weeks old and needs to eat on demand.  Stop trying to get LO on a schedule and just let him eat.

Baby will fall into him own schedule/ routine on his own

  • We have also been following BabyWise/EASY routines and I've been keeping a log of LO's feeding times.  He was pretty set on a routine he made himself and then he started to sleep longer at night.  Our DS was well above birth-weight at 1 week so I've never woken him up to feed him with a few exceptions (been 5 hours, going to church or somewhere and he's already stirring).
He was around 3 weeks old when he "changed" the schedule on me-I think due to growth spurt but he's started a new routine now.
We got off routine on Sunday and missed 2 naps, and he woke up every 2 hours that night.  Yesterday we got back on "schedule" and he slept 6 hours straight.
I would let DC sleep as long as they want-it is his way of telling you he's capable of sleeping longer.  I just keep track of his feedings on a piece of paper and try to find the similar patterns!  Good luck!

  • You haven't asked for opinions/thoughts on your schedule for your LO so I won't comment - do what you want with your kid.

At that age, our son was on his own schedule of eating about every 3 hours but going longer stretches over night similar to your son now. We would wake him at 11/12 pm - he wouldn't wake to eat then on his own and it is true you do not have to wake your LO to eat once they regain their birthweight. We would feed him at this time to "top him up" - some might call it dreamfeeding, whatever, then he would go until 3 or 4 am before waking on his own to eat. After a while of that we decided to see what would happen if we didn't wake him then. He just slept all the way through until 3 or 4 am. So, you could always try waking him but I think you can't control when or which feedings he will eliminate on his own.

  • We are planning to use the Babywise method as well. I'm currently in the process of reading the book & I think that it says to let him sleep unless the time exceeds 5 hours until he is 3 months old. Double check me on this because I don't have my book handy. I do know that they would not suggest you dropping the night feeding just yet.

It sounds like you are doing a great job. I hope this helps.
