Shower returns... previous mommies come in.

Had a nice small shower this weekend. I got 4 hooded towels and tons of little blankets (I don't even want to count). Wondering from previous mommies... how many of these types of items is too much? I know a lot of them do not cost much but for example I have 4 white onesies to my name. At some point isn't it better to exchange some of them for stuff you don't have or need off your registry? I am trying to tell myself to wait and see what I get at my next shower on November 6th. Some people didn't give receipts so if the prices drop on these items and I try to return them I won't get all the money back. I am like other mommies staring at my registry worrying about all the crap I don't have yet. I am lucky I have gotten a lot of bigger ticket items but lack umm diapers, wipes, only have 4 burp clothes, small but very necessary items and am worrying! One more shower has become my mantra...

  • In the beginning, we only gave DD a bath once every couple of days. So, in reality, you will maybe go through 1-2 towels per week. We then transitioned to more baths during the week when she was older and gave a bath everyday. We had 7 hooded towels to get through the week with one laundry load worth of her clothes/towels. We then started using just regular towels and toddler hooded character towels when she was walking around 14 months. It's a personal preference, but I hated doing laundry so the more the merrier for me. Also, the hood was nice in the winter months because it kept their head covered while drying off/putting on diaper, etc.

As far as blankets, again this is a personal preference. If they are Gerber blankets, I would return. Those are so tiny after you wash. You want the blankets to be a nice sizing so you can swaddle. We had about 15-20. Keep in mind that when they are swaddled they can spit up/puke or a diaper may leak and cause you to use a new blanket. We probably went through 1-3 blankets per day. Also, if you are having a girl, my almost 3 year old is now using her swaddling blankets for her baby dolls. So they can be repurposed. We had about 4 heavier sized blankets. DD used these in the following winter as her blanket in her crib.

    This is all great advice.

We still use the bigger hooded towels with DD because she likes to wear them after the shower and run to her room.  We only had about three of the littler ones when she was a baby.  And we, too, only have her a bath every 3 or 4 days in the beginning.  Their skin gets too dry if you bathe them too often.

We have quite a few blankets, and I never thought we had too many.  I've only bought one heavier one for this LO, because most of DD's are neutral.  I think I'll still buy a few more.  I don't know if you got any, but I recommend Aden and Anais if you're going to try swaddling.  They are the best!

  • Ditto pps about the towels.

As far as blankets, we ended up with a million and didn't use a ton of them.  I think a few good swaddling blankets and then some nice quilts or fleece blankets are enough.  I live in southern CA, though, so we probably don't use as many as people in colder areas.

I would return anything you are on the fence about, though.  We ended up doing this to save space and had money on Target and BRU gift cards for months to use when we thought of something we did need and/or just to pay for diapers and wipes.  You may want to wait until after your next shower to decide, but definitely be thinking about it.
