Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Bath setup, what's yours look like?

I water bathed her once and she freaked out! I have one of those eurobath baby tubs and i put it in the bathtub. i found it very awkward bending over the tub and felt so clumsy. we don't have much counter space in the bathroom nor kitchen. i've just been sponge bathing her thoroughly but would like to bathe her without her screaming and me not breaking my back, suggestions?

  • We use a baby tub at the kitchen sink, and do an assembly line-style- bath, lotion, diaper, jammies. If you dont have counter space, I would recommend getting some pads for your knees to bring you up higher so you aren't killing your back

  • I make DH get in the bathtub and hold her on his legs. It isn't very efficient, but it's super cute and it seems to calm her down to be held skin-to-skin like that.
  • We tried every type of bath and DD always screamed the entire time.  On a whim, we decided to try her in the shower with DH.  She loves it!  So that's our routine now, every night she has daddy shower time and she smiles and laughs the whole time.

  • We have the fisher price newborn to toddler (or infant...can't remember) tub (the simple blue plastic one). We use it in the sink. DS is starting to like it more and more. But we definitely have to put him in the tub when he's in a good mood. I make sure to have everything on hand and his diaper and pjs ready for when we're done.

  • My LO loves the bath! i think it is because i took a bath every single night when i was preganant. Now when he hears water running, he instantly gets quiet and alert. we just have an infant to toddler bath in the bathtub, and it breaks my back a bit, but i deal with it. cant wait till he can just sit in the tub!!!

  • We have a safety1st Froggy tub. It comes with the bathtub you can place in the big bathtub, a sling and a froggy sponge mat. I use all 3 together when I bathe her in the big tub, but sometimes I will bathe her in the kitchen sink using the froggy sponge mat underneath her while DH holds her up. My LO loves bath time!

Just make sure you keep the room warm - they hate being even the slightest bit chilly. I use DD1's bathroom b/c it's large and she has a stepstool for the sink, I just grab it to sit on when I'm using the big tub.

I also lay everything out I will need after she gets out of the bath so there's no "delay" in getting her warm jammies on, bottle warmed and swaddling her for bed time.

  • I bathe him in the bathtub with me. He hates his tub and this is the only way we can do bath time without screaming. MH sits beside the bathtub with the towel to make sure he gets wrapped up and dried as fast as possible. He hates getting out of the bath.

  • DS loves the bath. He's in the infant-to-toddler tub, by Fisher Price I think.  I keep his bath wash, his lotion, diaper and pajamas right by the tub so he isn't chilly for long once he comes out.  If I let him, he'd be in that tub all night!
  • Right now, DS is bathing with me in the tub. We tried a mesh chair in the bathtub, and have the FP 'whale of a time' tub, but he is completely unhappy with those so far.  I use his soap as a bubble bath and get 15-20mins of 'me' time in the bath while DH gets him awake and ready. DH then brings him to me, I hold and wash, DH rinses. We generally get him in and out within 10mins. He is calm and cooing throughout, probably due to the skin to skin contact, and only starts bawling when we take him out. I have washcloths, soap, and his dryer-heated towel in the bathroom with me. DH then takes him into bedroom to diaper and dress/swaddle him for the night while I get out of the tub and ready for bed. Then I either lotion/massage him or feed him, depending on how DS is acting (calm=massage, fussy=feeding). It's getting easier for DS each time...not sure how much is because he is getting to like it versus us getting better with it :)

  • The NICU did swaddle baths, and our babies LOVED it.  They eventually grew out of the swaddle, but it's the best way to keep new babies from freaking out in water.

We still use the above little tub, insert, and set up in our tub now that we're 3 months.

This, exactly! I'm not a fan of "baby stuff" if I don't absolutely need it since we don't have much storage, so I didn't want to buy (and store!) a tub. I put her on my lap in the tub since 2 weeks old and she loves it! She yawns and laughs and only cries when Daddy takes her out.

  • We have 3 different bathing processes.

    1.  Sometimes we do a quick bath in the bathroom sink.  I just fill the sink and plop her in.   Hold with one hand and use the washcloth with the other.

    2.  We also have the turtle sponge from BRU.  It's cheap ($6?) and we lay her on it in the big tub and kneel at the tub.

    3.   Or, I take a bath with her and then hand her off to H to dry and diaper.

  • With DS at this age he HATED the baby bathtub, sink etc.  I used to shower with him all the time and it worked really well.  I would put him in the bouncer seat with a CD and towel around him, get in the shower and wash my hair, pick him up and clean him, then wrap him back in the towel and put him back in the seat or hand him to DH, then get out and get my robe on.

With DD, we use the infant bathtub inside the regular bathtub. She loves baths and it is so much easier this way.  I guess I'm just used to being on the floor in the bathroom from giving DS baths all the time.

  • Thanks ladies for your suggestions. I ended up putting her in a small plastic bin filled with warm water on the counter. She didn't cry. Hey, whatever works right?
