Hey there... if you scroll down a few posts, I posted about an HUA which for all intents and purposes is a 2-vessel cord. (I still have 2 arteries but one is tiny and malfunctioning). We just found out about it at 28 weeks, and I'm seeing the specialist every 2 weeks and have to rest for 4 hours a day. Other than that, all I know is from the research I've been doing... it seems that the main concerns are that this is correlated with some other birth defects, so depending how far along you are, they may want to do some other testing; also, there's an increased risk for growth restrictions.
I just started hanging out on this board so I'll be around if you want to chat or anything. What have they told you thus far about the condition?
I just came on here to quickly post my very positive two-vessel cord experience and saw your post, so I'll respond to you first. DD had a two-vessel cord. I delivered her a week ago vaginally at 41 weeks, 2 days. She weighed 9lbs at birth and is PERFECTLY healthy!
We discovered her 2-vessel cord at around 16 weeks and besides getting a fetal echocardiogram, I just had to go in for a growth ultrasound every month to keep track of her overall growth.
My OBs were very reassuring about her cord throughout the pregnancy. A two-vessel cord is more common than you think. Yes, you need to keep tabs on it, but it often causes little or no problems to your baby.
Enjoy the extra ultrasounds and try not to stress too much about it. I found a nice support group on babycenter.com. Search "SUA" to find it. You'll read lots of positive 2-vessel cord stories there. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy.
I had this with DS and it really is more common then you think. You just don't hear about it as often. Most babies are born perfectly healthy.
We found DS's SUA at the 20 week ultrasound. We did an amnio at that point to rule out chromosomal issues. I was 36 at the time but wouldn't have had an amnio if they hadn't found anything. I got regular growth ultrasounds every month. I also developed PTL and pre-e and was put on bedrest for the last 3 weeks. A combination of all of these led them to induce at 37 weeks. DS was born perfectly healthy at 5lbs 13 oz.
He's a perfectly healthy and very energetic 15 month old now.
I had a 2 vessel cord with my son and he had a heart condition that was fatal. However, at the same time, my neice was pregnant and had a 2 vessel cord, and her little boy was completely fine. Best of luck!
I had one, and my daughter was born healthy and has had no issues. We had lots of u/s, NSTs, and a couple fetal echocardiograms. Try not to worry (or Google!) too much!!
