Hi Ladies,
I don't post much but I had a question that you may be able to answer. Which vaccines are your doctors recommending you get while pregnant?
My doctor recommends I get the flu and whooping cough now but the CDC recommends getting whooping cough after delivery. I am in California so maybe that is why she is saying I should get it now.
Also, I spoke to someone who said their doctor said anyone who will be in contact with the baby should get the whooping cough vaccine. Is anyone else hearing this?
Thanks for your sharing.
Re: Vaccines during Pregnancy
Where are you in CA? If your're in an area with an outbreak (like the Bay Area), the CDC does recommend that you get vaccinated for whooping cough during pregnancy. Otherwise, it's recommended that you get it before you're discharged from the hospital after giving birth, but it takes about 4 weeks to actually develop immunity.
I got my TdaP a couple of weeks ago, and I had a flu shot at my last visit. We are also asking anyone who is coming to visit after the baby is born to make sure they are up-to-date on their pertussis vaccinations, per my practice's recommendation.
I was given the flu shot at one of my OB appointments a few weeks ago and she said I'd get the whooping cough one after I deliver. She did recommend family members get the Pertussis vaccine as well.
My parents immediately went to get the vaccine as well as the flu shot. My husband's parents are saying they're not getting it b/c they just don't feel like it's necessary. They keep saying what are the chances that they'll get whooping cough and that it was never a big deal before? They are going to get the flu shot though b/c they don't want to risk getting the flu themselves.
The already over-protective, first-time mom in me is feeling somewhat irritated since they live 5 minutes away and my parents live 10 hours away so they'll be spending more time with the baby.

I just spoke to my Dr. again and the reason she wants me to get the pertussis vaccine now is because I live in an outbreak area (Bay Area) and I am a teacher so I am around children. She suggested anyone who will be around the baby who is also around children should get it. The spouse of these people should get it too. This is my whole family. My mom and sisters are all teachers so she said they and their spouses should get it. As for my husband's family, he will get it and we are asking his sister who is a teacher and her boyfriend to get it but the rest are not around children so they should be okay. Hope that helps someone.
She said the CDC highly recommends every pregnant woman get the flu shot.
