Anyone getting them done? I have been looking around on photographers websites and they charge a FORTUNE! I want the pics but not for close to 1,000$. What is everyones plans for getting them done?
I'm not doing Maternity portraits. (Not really my style...)
I'll be taking newborn portraits myself. I spent an obscene amount of money on getting a photo minor and DSLR in college, so I may as well put them to some use.
The fact with photographers, though, is you get what you pay for. If you want quality, fine art quality, photographs you're going to have to pay $$... Otherwise, you might as well take your kid to Sears.
BUT... the other option might be to find a local photography student who needs a subject for an assignment or something. I know when I was in college I was always hard-up for subjects, and I did quite a few portrait sessions for free just because I needed the experience (and the grade).
I'm not doing maternity pics. I will do newborn pics, but I'm a photographer so I will do them myself since I will have the extra help I need from dh and my parents.
I'm getting them done but by an amateur (spelling) photographer for only $60 bucks. Check your local craigslist for people looking to build their portfolio.
I'm lucky to have a friend who loves photography. Shes not a professional nor did she have any schooling, but its her hobby and I think that she does a good job. She always refuse to let me pay her so I'm going to take her to a great place for dinner as a THANKS!
I wasn't planning on getting them done, but the photographer I found to do newborn pics was offering a package deal where you could get maternity photos and newborns for a great price.
I'm a huge fan of professional pictures, so even if I don't feel like I look amazing, I'd still like this time documented in a way that I'll feel proud to show off down the road and not just with snapshots.
We lucked out that one of my friends is a photographer. She's been an amateur for a while and went professional this year. She is giving us an amazing deal. $250 for as long as we want her with unlimited pictures (we'll have to pay to print them, but no biggie). She driving down to where we moved and will be doing them for us at the beach. She's also going to do our newborn pics.
I agree with PP's. Check for someone looking to build their portfolio. We also get emails a lot from a local baby store in town that has a photographer come in a few times a month and does free sittings. You just buy the pictures. They looked pretty reasonable and I liked that they had all the props and stuff (you just have to leave the house, which I didn't want to have to do).
Luckily, DH's cousin is a photographer so I'll be doing both with her. Shes amazing and in the DFW area and probably willing to drive to Austin. However, she's probably pretty expensive. But she has been featured in southern living wedding edition, so she's worth it. I agree with pp, you get what you pay for good luck finding someone!

I am not going to get them done professionally, because I feel like I can do it myself. I honestly don't have the money for it because like you said they charge a fortune.
I'm not getting maternity pics - I'm just not really comfortable with them. My friend is a photographer, so she's going to do my newborn pics - her prices are very competitive, and since she's younger, she does more artsy and contemporary pics than if I went to some "professional studio".
I'm going to take advantage of this Ohio fall foliage and have DH do maternity pics. He won several contests when we was younger, but hasn't done photography in awhile. I'm also going to pay the big bucks once Brynn is born to get all of my kids photographed together plus some newborn pics. We have only done photographs with our 2 kids once and it was just at WalMart because my mom scheduled it. I can't wait to have pictures done!
I would suggest putting an add on Craigs List, with how much you would like to spend, and ask people to send you samples of their work. You will get a ton of response in your price range and have a lot to choose from.
I go back and forth on this. I think I'll def end up doing newborn pics but play it by ear on the maternity ones. I think it's like everyone said - you get what you pay for - so I'm looking to see if I can find someone with a decent price. I loved our wedding photog, but I haven't asked her yet, how much she would charge.
I'm a semi-pro photography and plan on taking maternity/newborn pictures myself. I'm enlisting my cousin to help, ie: I set up the camera, tripod and settings and she'll be to do the rest. Plus my DH can help when he isn't in the photos also.

our newborn shots were about $275, however they made great family gifts and they were by far worth every.single.penny.
Maternity ones are NMS to pay for professionally.
