Newborn & non-walking toddler, how to leave the house alone?

My daughter is walkng, but only for very short distances from couch to couch.  She can walk holding on to my hands for longer distances.

If you had a newborn and a non-walking toddler, how did you get to the car - without any help?

I think what is complicating things is that my newborn is not in a regular carseat.  She is in a special carseat that has to stay in the car, so not an infant carrier.

I think if she was in a carrier, I could carry the carrier and hold the toddler on my hip.

We don't have a garage, or driveway - and we hardly get a spot directly in front of the house.  So, putting one in and going back for the other really does not work.

How do you do it?  Know a magic trick LOL

  • Double stroller!!!!     If I'm by myself (I'm in the same boat, except Dominic is in a regular infant seat), I get out the double stroller.   I also have a baby carrier (baby bjorn and hotslings), but I find it hard to carry Natalie when Dominic is in the carrier.....

At home, it's not an issue... but, if I had a set up like yours (no parking in front of house), I would use a double stroller...

  • DD walks, but not that well.  I plan to wear #2 in my Moby wrap as much as possible, leaving my hands free for #1.

  • I used my Moby carrier and Bjorn with DD when DS was 13 months and barely walking. I'd either put DS on my other free hip or put him in a stroller.
  • We are in similar situations. We HAVE to have an infant carrier. If we do not use it, Gwen is in the Moby, and I carry Lincoln. We also have made use of the double stroller. Lincoln is not really even weight bearing (at least balance-wise) so he has to be held.
  • We use the infant carrier and then I carry DS on my hip.  I can also carry one in each arm (I pick up DD first, then reach down for DS and he holds on so I can pick him up with one hand).  But it would be hard to put one in then put the other in.  Really though, a stroller and carrier, or a double stroller would probably work best for you.  Good luck!

  • I wear my infant & carry my toddler on my hip to get to the car. I put the toddler in first & then load the infant into his seat. I don't bring the infant seat into the house anymore.
  • My toddler was 30lbs and did not hold on to me very well.  We used the double stroller, or single stroller/baby bjorn carrier combo, if I had a ways to go to get to the car.

  • One on each hip:)

  • One on each hip, or hold the newborn on one side and walk holding the toddlers hand on the other side (this makes for a very slow walk to the car and i've had to be careful since the toddler sometimes just falls/loses balance so i have to be holding tight so she doesn't fall completely).  Also wear the newborn in a carrier and carry or walk with the older on.
  • There was a short time I used the double stroller to get my twins to the car - they were to big for carriers and not walking well enough to get to the car in any sort of orderly fashion
