Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I don't get it...Munchkin sippy problem?

I bought DS' first hard spout sippy this morning.  We went the cheap route and picked up a 99 cent Munchkin sippy w/ valve (9 oz, package says "New!") at Target.

I noticed DS wasn't very successful, so I filled it with water and tried it myself.  I barely could get anything out either.  I took the valve out, checked everything over, and can't figure it out.  Works fine without the valve, but I don't think I'm ready for a non-spill proof cup at 9.5 months.

Anyone else had problems with these cups?  Is this just a cheap and crappy item?  Or I am just totally missing something here?  The back says to "squeeze valve at post to activate" before first use/after cleaning...not really sure what the heck that means.  I squeezed it, not really sure why though!

Help?

  • I had the same problem with Munchkin. We bought a soft spout and could barely get any water out. DH punched a big hole in the spout with a knife. The cup is basically useless now. Lesson learned: Never by a Munchkin cup!

  • same here! we bought a soft spouted one and i could barely get anything out of it.  only if i pushed with my gums/lips in the right place.  LO got so frustrated with it...we bought several different ones and those are the only ones she had a problem with

  • Jam something small through the hole in the spout. I had this issue with the Nuby cups and that solved it.
  • I bought that one too because I just wanted a cheap on-the-go cup to carry in her diaper bag, and the same thing happened to me. I could barely get anything out, so I know DD couldn't! We also poked a hole in the spout in an attempt to get it to work and rendered it useless. We're sticking with our Avent sippy.

  • I have a few different variations of the tomee tippee explora sippys and they are great.  Not too bad on price either.
  • You squeeze the valve to make sure that the slit cut in it during manufacturing is actually open.  Chances are it isn't -- try that, hold it up to the light and you can see the slit in the valve.  If it doesn't open when you squeeze it just slice it with a knife - then the valve will work and the sippy should as well.  This happens with almost all sippies -- sometimes the valves are already open and sometimes they aren't.  That said, Munchkin ones aren't my faves.  We love the Playtex click and lock.  Great sippies.

I checked that before, and its open like it should be.  Just a terrible design I guess.  I know the holes aren't blocked because the milk pours out without the valve in place.

I actually like our soft spout Munchkin sippy.  Its better than the Nuby, Avent, and Playtex ones we own.   I guess I need to head to Babies R Us for a better selection.  I didn't see the Playtex hard sippes at Target, but there were quite a few empty spots too.

Glad I'm not the only one!  Seriously terrible design.  I had to suck so hard it made the muscles in my cheeks sore!  I'm going to wash it and take it back tomorrow.

  • I thought this too when we first bought ours.....DH and I traded back and forth sucking on it to no avail.  HOWEVER - we then figured out, through watching DS, that it's actually working like a nipple - you have to clamp down and suck at the same time.... they work awesome and usually the LOs figure it out.  We saw bubbles when he was sucking on it so we knew it was working and then tried to figure out how it worked.
  • We have two Munchkin sippies.  One is a soft spout and the other is a straw sippy.  The soft spout is great, never had any problems with it, and you suck the water out just like a bottle or human nipple.  Works differently than an adult cup with a spout.

The straw sippy is great too, except when you take the straw out to clean it, it's a PITA to get back in.
