Crossing the finish line...

I'm a long-time runner, now 34 weeks pregnant. Started off running 3-4 times/wk, with 1 long run. Until 31 weeks I kept running, though slowing down and cutting back on mileage as the weeks went on.  At this point even jogging feels too weird. Any suggestions on workouts for these last 6 weeks or so?  I've been walking on an incline and hitting the elliptical, but looking for new ideas...

Re: Crossing the finish line...

  • I was able to run until the day I went into labor (my due date). What is feeling weird? The only thing that was a little weird for me were the looks I got from people when I was 9 months pregnant and running.

  • I did some swimming towards the end of my pregnancy.  It's great to get your heartrate up and you feel lighter in the water.  And not having any impact was nice too.

  • Like my stomach is bouncing a lot, cramping after 2-3 miles and nausea.
  • I would focus on walking (with some good hills in there to get some aerobic work), the elliptical, pre-natal yoga (or other workout tapes) and swimming.

However, you could also just take a couple days off running and give it a try later. There have been times throughout my pregnancy that running felt awkward or weird at times, and I just took a couple days off and tried it again and felt just fine. Just listen to your body.

  • I ride my bike now, and towards the end when I think my belly will be too big I'm going to switch to swimming, and walking. I bet the feeling of being weightless will be amazing. Not to mention what the other ladies said, less impact on your joints right now. Carrying around an extra 25+ pounds is hard on your body, as is.

  • The last month I power walked almost every day, and it felt great.  I also mixed in the elliptical, swimming, and light weights about twice a week.
