I don't know, I actually think it is fine, GAE does not spell anything. And I do not think most kids know what their friends full initials are. But if you are going to have a problem with it I think it is worth just finding another middle name.
I don't think so. I had a 30 second freak out the other day when I realized that FI is German, and if we have a boy the initials will be SS if we use the boy name we are planning on. Honestly. I went to school with a kid who's last name was Gay, and surprisingly enough it was really never an issue. Kids are usually picked on for what they do, and not names. I don't know anyone who has ever been bullied over a name.
I don't know people who have been bullied over names, but I've heard PLENTY of teasing over names. And not just at school; grown adults (usually men) in the workplace, in social settings, etc. tease people about all kinds of stuff too. I find it odd when people just talk about "Oh their classmates won't even know who that is"; haven't the rest of you ever been teased by annoying uncles, CWs, friends of parents, etc.?
That said, I think GAE is fine initials. Like pp said, it doesn't spell anything.
Re: s/o initials...G.A.E?
I think it's only an issue if you make it an issue (does that make sense?)
Gae does not equal gay.
