TTC After a Loss

Do you know what this means?

I got my itemized "bill" from the hospital for the m/c (I only have to pay $25 copay).

One of the items is listed as "SURG/PATH G&M LVL 4"  and it's listed as costing $354.00. Do you know what that means?

The rest of the items are bw, us, etc.

FYI: My miscarriage cost a grand total of $2,075.00 :(

ETA: I called the hospital and the service center is closed until Monday (maybe Tuesday with Columbus day)

Re: Do you know what this means?

  • did they do pathology on the baby/POC (products of conception)? that might be it-

  • Path usually refers to pathology (lab).

Did you have any testing done?

  • If I had to guess surgical pathology probably means the reading of a speciman

  • I have to agree with the other ladies and go with "pathology" - I hope the hospital or your doc can give you some answers soon!

  • I just my bill today too.  :(  It really blows to see it all broken down into dollars and cents like that, doesn't it?

  • So that would mean then to check the chromosome count and see if there was a genetic issue with the baby, right?

Don't cha think someone should have picked up a phone somewhere and told me what the results were?!

no, path testing will be different than chromosomal testing (although your hospital could have billed them together). Path testing will look at the tissue to make sure it's "normal" no infection, etc.

Yeah this is true although I brought mine into the office and I called a few weeks later and they said there wasn't enough to process and get a result on but they still should have called you

this- i asked the same thing at my f/u- i was told that the hospital does testing on all specimens to make sure there was no infection in the tissue that caused it- but its not the same as finding out if there were chromosomal defects etc- my office doesnt do THAT testing until 3 losses.

  • For some doctors offices its standard protocol to test, I would think anytime there is a specimen they would test (in the same line as if they took out a mole, they're required to check it for cancerous cells to ensure everything looks typical). But I would def. call and ask for the results, sometimes doctors will give you the "Typical, no problems found" kind of response because a path report can get pretty complex with all the medical jargon, even if they found nothing abnormal.  Sorry you're having to deal with this now though, nothing like having salt rubbed in the wound *HUGS*
