So tired of high fasting numbers! vent

My post meal numbers are typically good, unless I just don't apy attention to how much I've eaten or are out and having to figure out something to eat.  Basically, few and far between situations that I can mostly avoid.

But my fasting numbers are always too high!  I've been on insulin since 9/21.  They started at 5 units, then 8 and yesterday they switched it to 12.  They've ranged from 105-118.  This morning was 113.  Yesterday I talked to my OB about the plan and she said that they'd need a few more weeks to decide everything.  Right now it looks like I'll be induced only one week early, but if my numbers continue to stay bad, and if my post dinner numbers continue to rise (which I think were just because it was a busy weekend but she kind of disagreed) then I could be induced 2 weeks early.  And now it's looking more like a c-section than a vaginal birth because LO has a big belly.

I'm just frustrated!  I've tried everything with the numbers.  Protein only snack, no eating after 10 pm (we stay up late and sleep in late since DH doesn't work mornings so that would be closer to the equivalent of 7 or 8 for others).  Nothing works.  I'll wake up starving in the middle of the night and test and my number will be fine then it skyrockets by the time I wake up (with or without a snack then).  I'm just giving up hope that they will ever be good.  I feel like they could load me full of insulin but since I seem to be responding to the "dawn effect" and the natural hormones that are released overnight while I sleep, nothing is going to help.  In which case I'd just like them to say "ok, we're doing a c-section 2 weeks early on this day."  It takes so much effort to make sure I'm eating right and plan my day around my eating and fitting in excercise (which barely seems to help).  I feel like it's a full time job and there's barely time for me to do anything else.  I would just love if there was one less thing to worry about and they would go ahead and tell me when they're taking LO.  At lest then I could tell myself I just have to hold out until X day and it would give me something more tangible and real to hope for than just "I'm doing this for LO, whenever he arrives."  I don't know, it just seems like it would make a big difference to me.

  • I'm on 12 parts insulin now.  The endocrinologist told me that's nothing, really.  It's almost like not taking any insulin. So you really aren't loading up on it.   And as you progress, you become more resistent and they'll need to up your insulin.

  • How long exactly are you going from your last meal till morning?  I know that when I go longer then 9 or 10 hours my fasting numbers go way up.  Maybe try a late snack and then see where you are in the morning.

It honestly varies.  The shortest is 7 hours and the longest has been 10.  I haven't thought about if there was a connection there.  It seems odd that it would be that way when the packet said that it works best between 8-12 hours.  I do try to wait and have my snack before bed.  There's been a few times when I've had a snack a few hours after dinner and then another small one before bed if I'm up for several more hours (like eating at 6 but up until midnight or 1 am thing) and my numbers were still standard.  Maybe I should try to pay attention to why it can be 105 some days and 115 others.  And then go from there.  To me (and from what my OBs have said) over is over.  It's not like 105 is "almost."

Ugh, just wanting this to be over!

  • I was on insulin with my first pg and just like you they kept on increasing the dosage every other day or so.  I learned with this pg that I have to stop eating 12 hours before I have to test my blood sugar.  That means if I have to get up at 4:45 am then I have to have my bed time snack at 4:45 pm.  we go to bed pretty early around here.  I m not hungry in the evening, and I usually have raging heartburn that hunger isnt an issue.

It will all be over soon.

  • I'm having troubles with my fasting numbers too.  I started on 14 units 2 weeks ago, and yesterday at my appointment they told me to go to 20!  And this is STILL only keeping my fasting numbers in the low 90's.  I too have found that nothing really helps at night...I've tried multiple different bedtime snacks.  So...I'm with you, I'm done with this!  And I still have 7 weeks to go (unless the growth ultrasound at 36 weeks says otherwise).

  • I'm there with you.  I've been upped to 9 units in the morning and now 10 units at dinner time, which is a change from taking the insulin at bedtime.  My numbers before bed just weren't getting lower so he decided to try it at dinner instead... not much change yet.

My OB wasn't talking about inducing me much earlier when I saw him yesterday.  He said that they may let me go to term and not really beyond but it depends on how I progress with the diabetes and my weekly NSTs.  He never mentioned a growth u/s either.  (I should add that I do trust him, he's got a stellar intl. reputation and is a professor at one of the top medical schools in the country) He was away last week and his replacement (locum) said I would be induced at 38 or 39 weeks.  To be honest, I would love to have a date planned.  We live 2 hours from my doctors and the hospital where I'll be delivering and it makes me quite nervous to go into labour and then drive the 2 hours to the city.  It just makes me nervous and I don't think the car is the most comfortable place to start labour, driving down a coastal mountain highway.  I know a lot of people will disagree and say it's not medically required and I would likely feel the same way if we lived close to the hospital.
