Cloth Diapering

Do you remove poopy inserts?

Hi all!  I'm still preggo but we already ordered the bum genius 4.0s (with snaps).  Anyone else use them, and, do you remove the poopy inserts before washing?  Since it seems your'e supposed to wash diapers & inserts in cold first, then warm, I'm wondering if we could get away with removing the inserts bewteen the two washes.  What are your thoughts?

Any other helpful tips are welcome too!  Big Smile

Re: Do you remove poopy inserts?

  • The poop kind of seeps through the pocket shell, but the inserts don't generally get super-poopy.  I remove them before throwing both pocket and insert into the diaper pail.  Then I don't touch them again with my hands until they are clean (on wash day I just empty the pail liner into the washer and throw the liner on top of the diapers.  I wouldn't wash them together because I don't think they will get as clean.

  • trust me: Its MUCH easier to just remove it when you take the dipe off than to sift through wet (and still dirty)  laundry and remove them then.

ditto this.  I have a small can just for shells b/c I wash them on warm and all my inserts on hot.

ETA: well, my AI2 shells get separated.  The pocket shells go through with the inserts.

  • The part that you grab to remove the insert is never poopy and rarely even wet since it's all the way at the top of the back of the diaper.  With some pockets you can also just shake the liner out into the pail if you don't want to touch it, but it's really no big deal.

I wash my hands after changing a diaper anyway so I don't mind touching the insert.  I just change the diaper and set the dirty one aside, move DS somewhere safe (usually to his playmat on the floor), pull the insert out and throw the diaper in the pail, then wash my hands.

  • i unstuff before they ever go in the pail.  usually i can just shake the insert out so i don't have to actually touch it.

i couldn't imagine having to take the time to sort through the washer, pulling inserts out....much easier to do it before they ever go in the dirty pail

  • Thanks everyone for your input!  We'll separate them before washing.

  • I remove it before throwing it in the wet bag, fold the laundry tabs in and take out the insert and put it in the bag/pail.
  • Its easier for me to throw the whole diaper in my pail liner (I hang it on the door in the hallway btwn my kids rooms).

When I do laundry it takes me 2 minutes to separate them all and toss in the wash.

    It works for me.
