First, let me start by saying I love my doctor, so I'm not judging his diagnosis at all. I trust that he has my health as top priority.
Two weeks ago, I failed the 1 hour on a Monday, and the 3 hour on Friday. I followed the instructions for both tests perfectly. I got the news that I failed the 3 hour the following Monday, and I began researching and changing my diet as best as I could until I met with the dietician and the diabetic counselor. I met with each of them yesterday (meaning I've been following my own research for diet for about a week) and started testing after the meeting (my breakfast had been fit for the GD diet, and my appointment with the diabetic counselor was at the time I needed to start testing so we went ahead). I took my numbers the rest of the day Tuesday (3 total - skipped the fasting because it was prior to my meeting and I hadn't gotten instructions yet) and all the way up to my OB appointment yesterday (appointment time was right after a blood sugar test). It is the first OB appointment I've had since I got the GD diagnosis.
My doctor took a look at my numbers (6 total readings) and said he does not think I have GD and that it's a fluke that I failed both the tests. I passed the one hour with my daughter with flying colors (103/130) so I have no prior history of GD. He wants me to stay on the diet but instead of doing 4 pricks a day, just do 1 at a different interval each day.
I'm thrilled at the possiblity of not having GD, but why in the heck did I fail both the 1 and 3 hour and end up fine? He made it sound like he flat out thinks I don't have it, rather than I've been able to control it with food. I'll say again that I'm thrilled, but I can't help but be a little perplexed. He even said he doesn't need my weekly numbers, and he would rather see me at three week intervals for the next two visits than two because everything looks fantastic. No high risk appointments, no nothing.
I don't want to come off like I'm second guessing his decisions, because that's not the case at all. I trust him more than any other doctor I've ever had, just not sure how this all worked itself out this way, you know?
edit: timeline clarification (at least i tried to clarify!)
Re: Failed the 1 & 3 hour, doc says I don't have GD
Very strange! Is the "103" number as part of your one hour test, your fasting number?
Personally, I would consider sticking to the diet and testing fairly regularly. It is normal for the numbers to tend to get worse as the pregnancy progresses.
GL!
Does he know you were following the diet when you took your blood for those numbers? That is very strange.
I failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour. however, since I had GD with my son I don't trust that I passed. So, I am following the diet and taking my blood four times a day. The high risk doctor said I only needed to take it at intervals since I technically don't have it - but that scares me.
Can you ask him to let you take the 3 hour again to see if you pass?
This. And have they asked you to keep track of your ketone levels in the morning? I thought I was following a great diet because my sugar numbers were low but it turned out that my ketone levels were high. I was not eating enough carbs which is bad.
103 was the number after the blood draw on the one hour with 130 being the limit. they did not take a fasting draw on the one hour. this was for my first child. i got a 138/130 on the one hour for this pregnancy. i don't recall my numbers for the 3 hour but i know i passed the fasting, and i think i failed the 1 and 2 hour draws and passed the 3 hour draw.
the doctor did/does know that i was following the diet when the finger prick tests were taken (the six numbers i showed him at the appointment).
they do not have me testing ketones.
i decided i was going to keep doing the 4 blood tests a day because i have the equipment, the doctor wants me to continue following the diet, and i'd rather just know for my own sake anyway.
I'd definitely keep checking it! My numbers are all good with the diet too, but I'm sure with the garbage I was eating before they'd be awful!
However, even in the 2 weeks I've been on the diet and monitoring, my fastings are rising... same thing as last time. It gets tougher as baby gets bigger.
I totally disagree with your doctor and I really don't understand how he can say you don't have GD. Your numbers were good because you were following the GD diet which is what the diet is for. I was dx at 26 weeks with GD (failed the 1 hour horribly & didn't even take the 3 hour) and I was diet controlled the whole time. If I followed the diet my numbers were great, but I definitely had GD.
The only way you don't have GD is if you can NOT follow the diet and still have great numbers. Also some women do fine with their meal numbers, but have a horrible time with their fasting. It's really important to watch this IMO.
One last thing -- as your pregnancy progresses it can get harder and harder for your body to produce enough insulin and keep your numbers low enough which is another reason to keep checking.
