Heart Rate?

I've read in a few books and online that if your pregnant you should keep your heart rate at <140 BPM during exercise.  I always wear a heart rate monitor when working out.  We're just starting TTC and I'm wondering if it's important to keep my HR <140 BPM during that 2 week wait to find out if I'm pregnant....I tried to keep in under 140 last night during my cardio workout and found it very difficult to do.

Re: Heart Rate?

  • I think as long as you are use to working out it is fine to go higher. I worked out before my pregnancy and during and kept it higher than 140. I think they just don't want girls that are not use to working out go jump on the treadmill and go all out. Talk to your OB.
  • Pretty much all excercise is fine while TTC.  And also, if you're serious about working out before, during, and after your pregnancy, I'd recommend reading Excercising Through Your Pregnancy.  It's fantastic.

  • I agree with PP.  I have always been a runner, and didn't expect or know that I was pregnant until I was 8 weeks along, so I was still doing pretty intense workouts that entire time.  Once I found out I was pregnant I did decrease my workout intensity, but didn't worry about my HR.  I think the 140 guideline is pretty outdated.  It's more important not to overexert yourself.  Just go by your feeling of intensity - not too hard, not too easy.  I ran my whole pregnancy until 4 days before DS was born.  I had the easy labor I've heard about, so stay in shape.  It's worth it!

  • Thanks for the responses and putting my mind at ease.  It's good to know I probably don't need to work out in slow motion :)

  • No need to workout in slow motion. THe book the was recommended is great! I don't monitor my HR at all  (but I never did) and the 140 rule got tossed in the 80s... sadly most docs aren't up on exercise research.
