Sleep Help

Tipp has been sleeping from 9pm-6am every night for the past month or so with no wakings to feed.  The past 2 nights he has been waking every hour or two, but not really awake, just fussing.  Typically if he wakes up DH or I will go in, put his paci back in and pat him without picking him up.  I have heard of the 4 month wakeful period, so I'm not sure if that is what this is.  I also know just because he has been STTN for weeks (and so early) it is likely he will revert.

He is trying to roll over and that may be causing him to wake up.  He is swaddled and we tried swaddling with his arms out one night in case he was waking himself up by trying to get his arms out.

He sleeps great from 9pm-11/12 so I'm not sure if I should add back a nursing session in the middle of the night. Maybe he is hungry and continues to wake up.  I guess I'm just nervous to start any bad habits now since things were going so well.

During the day is sleeps seems to be the same...4-5 catnaps through out the day, usually after each feeding until the evening.  He nurses 7-8 times daily.

Re: Sleep Help

  • My guess is the wakeful period.  R did that around 4 months and we did a feeding a few nights in a row and she went right to sleep afterwards.  I was so scared of her getting used to eating in the middle of the night, but she stopped waking after just a few nights.  I think it was a mixture of a growth spurt and a little cold.

I'm not sure about the likeliness of him reverting.  It seems like since he's STTN already he doesn't seem to need to eat in in the middle of the night right now (unless he's hitting a growth spurt) that he won't start needing it consistently unless he gets accustomed to it.

There are many theories and opinions on the subject, but you just have to find what works best for you and your LO.

  • Well, J didn't STTN until 9 months so I'm not much help, but what about doing a dream feed around 11? Maybe that would fill him up until the morning.
  • I'm sure opinions will vary, but I personally wouldn't get him up to nurse if he's not actually waking up, can be consoled by just a paci, and if you've already seemed to get past that point anyway (not that regression can't happen). If he's sleeping 9 hours with just a little fuss, I'd just chalk it up to a phase, and count my blessings! (Not to sound preachy--I had a good sleeper too!)

  • Unfortunately, I have no advice, especially since A woke up last night at 1:15 and 5:15 instead of her usual one time of 4:15. (Thankfully, it was DH's night to get up with her!) It's good, though, to hear that someone else is experiencing that, too.

Anyway, I wanted to say Tippett is adorable! If I didn't already have an arranged marriage for Arden, I would totally try to hook the two of them up!  Big Smile

  • ours has slept through the night since about 9 weeks but did "cry out" or wake a little in the middle of the night.  we *NEVER* got him out of the crib or fed him after he slept through the night the first time.  popping his paci in always worked.

now he sleeps about 10-11h at night before waking up and just rolling around/playing in his crib- we mainly go in and pop his paci in at that point now so we can hold him off til his first morning feeding (6:40 or later each morning).
