I recently got the Canon Powershot SX20IS. I didnt want to spend the $ on a DSLR but I didnt want another tiny camera, we already have a decent one. This one is the size of a SLR and you can take great pics with it. It isnt as fast as a DSLR but is much quicker than our canon pocket camera.
I was posting on my phone eariler, or I'd have been more talky.
I love the Canon G series cameras becuase they are called "proseumer category" (whatever pro and consumer are together) cameras. More functions than a typical PnS, less than a DSLR. Two reasons I didn't buy a DSLR: 1) basic dslr's do not have video capability (video-capable were $2K+ when I looked 2 yrs ago) and 2) size. I still wanted something to fit in my purse/diaper bag/DH's pocket. I didn't want two cameras, which I felt I'd need w/ a dslr. The G series marries the two really well. We've taken amazing pictures and blown them up to 11x14 for wall hangings, and they look great. You also have raw capability.
I love love love Canon. I"m not typically a brand loyal person, but I am truly loyal to Canon products. I had a lower end Olympus (same price range as canon) that I hated. I was so glad when it fell off the mantle and I got back to Canon.
Edit: also, with kids I needed the Sport mode. the G10 has a Sport mode and Kids & Pets mode that does fast shooting so you can get those shots of the kids being crazy.
I just got a Sony Nex and I'm obsessed with it. It is SO fun (has some really awesome features) and the pic quality is amazing. I was a point and shoot user who wanted the quality but not bulk of the DSLR. The Nex is basically a DSLR in a p&s body (or a little bigger with bigger lenses, but it's still awesome).
There is a forum on dp review that I read for weeks before making my decision. You can get a lot of info on it and see pics people have taken. I highly recommend..esp if you are between a p&s and full size DSLR. IF you have any q's about it, feel free to page me.
As you will see from the forum, there are a lot of former full size DSLR users who are switching to the NEX.
ETA: This camera is only a couple months old, so many people haven't heard of it yet, but it is still a hot seller (they sold 3 of them when I went to buy mine).
I bought my first DSLR in April, and as big as it is compared to a P&S (though it still does fit in my diaper bag), I'd never go back. I have the Canon T2i.
I've had a few of the Canon Powershot series as well, and I've always had good luck with them.
I wouldn't go with anything other than Canon or Nikon, but I prefer Canon. Go to the store and hold them in your hands to see which feels better to you. I think Canons in general are more user-friendly, for example, I feel like the button placement on my camera is more intuitive than the Nikon camera I tried out.
Re: C'mon ladies... I know more of you have camera recs

I have a Nikon D90. It ROCKS!
I heard great things about the Pentax.
