What does LO sleep in when it's cold?

It's just starting to get a little cooler here.  Last winter, LO was still being swaddled and/or in the sleepsack.  Now that he's standing in his crib, the sleepsack isn't going to work.  I'm sure a blanket wouldn't stay on him at night.  I tried the sleepsack with legs (Halo Early Walker), but it's ridiculously big.  He usually wear cotton sleepers with feet, or the 2 piece sets, but I've noticed he seems cold in the morning.

Thanks!!

Re: What does LO sleep in when it's cold?

  • Right now ds is wearing a fleece footed sleeper with a onesie underneath at night, when it gets colder he will wear cotton pj's under the fleece footed sleeper. It keeps him warm enough and our house gets pretty chilly.

  • I agree w/ pp. Layering is important since kids don't keep their blankets on. Fleece footie pj's w/ a onesie or cotton pj's underneath. There was a discussion about mom's who were still using sleepsacks, but I'm with you. There's no way my DD would tollerate that. And I've never seen the one's you described, with feet in them.

  • My 20-month-olds still sleep in sleepsacks. (Not only would they not keep a blanket on them and need 100% cotton rather than fleece for their skin b/c of eczema/sensitivity, but sleep sacks discourage crib-climbing and diaper-diving, so I am a fan. :)) They can run around in them, literally--even the ones without foot holes.

  • We do fleece footed sleepers and we'll add a onesie or plain cotton two piece pjs under them as it gets colder.  There's no way that she will stay under the covers, so I try to dress her for bed as if she was just sleeping with nothing else.  I also learned the hard way that I need to have something on her feet.  I HATE sleeping with socks or anything on my feet, so I would put her to bed without socks.  My bad for projecting my own issues, she sleeps so much better with socks on.
  • My almost 18 mo old still sleeps in sleepsacks for every nap and bedtime and he's been walking for 5 months, it's never been an issue.  He can easily stand up and move around the crib in them.  I agree with PP in that I think it also discourages crib climbing and diaper diving, on top of keeping him warm, so I am a huge fan.  We plan on using them as long as possible, which I would imagine to be at least another 6 mos to a year.

  • I thought the Halo ones were a bit big too, but then I realized that they are the perfect size to allow for movement and for him to bring his legs inside the sack.  The length helps keep feet warmer.  I used the regular sleepsacks with DS1 and he didn't have a problem walking in them.  I usually took it off right when I got him out of the crib anyhow.

  • DS wears fleece footed pj's to bed in the winter, but we live in Minnesota.  He also has two blankets in his crib.  I do think the blankets keep him a little warmer.  He's usually cuddled up next to one and has the other wrapped around his shoulders.  I don't think it gets as cold in Atlanta.

  • We're going to try the sleep sacks out again, along with fleece footed PJ's.  He was standing and cruising when we last used them, and he had no trouble moving around.
  • DS wears 2 piece cotton PJ's (long sleeves/pants) with a onesie under neath, and socks. ?He cuddles with his lovey fleece blanket, and then I go in and cover him with another fleece blanket before I go to bed. ?I know he doesn't keep it on him all night, but it makes me feel better if I do that. ?Smile ?I think cuddling with his blankie keeps him warm, and the onesie definitely helps too.

o/t, but thinking about LOs running around in sleep sacks with no foot holes made me audibly giggle.  so cute!

  • DD is still in a sleep sack and she's been able to stand/walk for a while now.  She either sits in her crib when she wakes and plays or she can stand, but the sleep sack discourages standing which I'm a fan of!  She won't sleep without being in the sleep sack which is why we're still using them, but there are perks to them too!  No climbing, keeps her warm, and no fear of pulling her diaper off.  We use grobags and change out the thickness depending on the weather.  LOVE them!
  • He sleeps in 2 piece pjs.  Right now he's still wearing short-sleeved with pants, but soon we'll start putting him in the long-sleeved with pants.  I have switched his fitted sheets from cotton to flannel.  He also sleeps with 2 blankets over him - one Aden & Anais and another soft blanket from BRU (cotton but feels softer like fleece but not quite as warm as fleece would be).

    I've gotta admit; it's adorable! ;)
Normally we do put the sleepsacks on right before we pop them in bed and take them off before taking them out of bed, but sometimes we'll set one of them down while doing something with the other and it's amazing how fast they'll take off in those things! (Giggling all the way b/c they think running in them is hilarious.)

  • We live in NC &  In winter I plan to do long sleeve footed (or not, maybe with socks b/c they are in between sizes right now & the feet might be flapping around & make them trip, but not likely fleece, we keep the house a little warm for that, IMO but if they seem cold, I will see how it goes. I plan to use a blanket this winter but know it'll probably come off.  Last year they wore regular cotton footed even after we stopped using swaddle/sleep sacks  & they never were cold so we're just going with it.
