Is there anything I can give sick 4 yo?

My daughter is sick with a cold. she has a super stuffy nose and has an occasional cough mostly in the mornings.. it sounds like she has to cough up mucus but obviously can't.. she also can't blow her nose well. is there anything I can give her/?  Should I be taking her in to  get on an antibiotic? The stuff in her nose looked a little green yesterday..

  • Does she have a fever?  If not, I'd probably wait it out.  I usually start with saline drops and vicks, and if it's still really bad, move on to the cough and cold OTC meds for that age group, like Pediacare.
  • what vicks product do u  use?  I thought they couldn't use cough meds

  • I usually give claritin during the day and benedryl at night. I also give her mucinex. No cough meds though (and not because you shouldn't). I give her the mucinex to loosen it all up and let her cough to get it all up.

I also use the saline several times a day and push water with the humidifier in her room at night.

I hope she feels better soon!

  • No, don't give her an antibiotic. They should be reserved for only absolute necessity. You can give mucinex or benadryl, but do so only if she's complaining. A humidifier will help with the stuffiness.
