Baby Names

Leni

Have been stationed in Germany and will be having the baby here as well, but will eventually be making our way back to the USA to live permanently in the next year.

I LOVE the girl name Leni (Lanie). Here in Germany, this is how they spell it which I love even more than Layney/Lanie. And it gives us a nice reference to this time in our lives living here.

My question-do you think once we get back to the USA people will assume it's the male name "Lenny"?

Re: Leni

  • I read it as "Lenny" before I opened the post.  Seeing you're in Germany explains the pronounciation.

Yes, I do think most everyone in the US would say Lenny though :(

  • Yes, and that is exactly how I read it.

  • Yes. I get the reference to your stay there.  However since you are returning to the US I would go with a different spelling or you will always get the Lenny comments.
  • Well, I knew how to pronounce it, but only because I've heard it before. It is Heidi Klum's DD's name. I really like the way it sounds, but I do have to agree that it will often be mispronounced here in the States.

  • I don't think most people would assume it was Lenny with that spelling--the singular I ending is very feminine. However, I don't think it will be pronounced correctly here, either.

Either go with one of the traditional spellings of Lanie, choose something like Elena or Alaina and call her Leni, or count on correcting spelling and pronunciation many, many times over.

  • I read it as Lenny and immediately thought of Laverne & Shirley. But if it is a legitimate name there is no reason why people in your immediate circle can't expand their horizons by learning a new name. How many people are learning how to pronounce Isla these days?

  • My sister's name is Eleni, and her nn is Leni  (pronounced like you said.)  Some people get it right, but some don't.  She does get "Lenny" occasionally. She doesn't mind she just corrects them and goes on.  If you ask her if she would want a different name because people pronounce it wrong she says no.  She loves her name.  If you like it I say go for it!
