Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

no flames please... Is 15months too early for a Big Kid Bed

Just wondered. I just read a post that made me think. She is in her crib now, but still wakes up at like 3 or 4 (after going down at like 7 or 7:30) then its really hard to get her back to sleep at 4am.  This moring I pulled her out of her crib, we layed together on the futon, she fell back to sleep, I went back to my bed, and next thing I hear is her playing in her room. (its babyproof) No screaming, nothing.... hmmm..... Smile

  • I don't think so but then DS sleeps with us in a family bed.

  • It def depends on the child IMO... my coworkers daughter was in a big girl bed at 20 months. We have been thinking about converting her crib now (at 22 months) since she jumped out of it last week. I would be a little timed at 15 months but then again i'm worried about it now at 22 months too so...

  • my SIL did with her DS but he was apparently a good sleeper. I did it around 17-18 mos thinking he would be free to play in his room if he did wake up and decide to wander, but what's weird is that he still considers the bed a boundary for him and waits until I come into the room, kinda like giving him "permission" to leave the bed... I dunno... do whatever you think is right!

ETA I will say it really does depend on the child. DS was climbing out of the crib at the point we converted, so I felt like he was ready. I didn't think he was ready at 15 mos, but you know your child best.

  • I can only speak from experience with my own son, but he was in no way ready at 15 months.  Still not ready at 21 months.  I like the peace of mind that comes with having him contained to his crib at night, especially with the new baby coming in the next few weeks.  But he hasn't climbed out, yet - once he does, I'll convert his crib to a toddler bed.

  • Ds was around that age when we switched him to a full size bed.  He was waking a lot, like yours, and we discovered he slept better on the futon mattress on the floor.  So we did that from about 14 months to 17 months and then made the switch to a full bed.  He slept so much better that way.
  • If it's just a mattress on the floor and her room is extremely well babyproofed, go for it! We didn't switch until 20 months but it was because we were moving and didn't want to move the crib or a bed. So we sold the crib and bought a mattress here. If it helps, DS is in a full size bed on the metal frame with a bed rail. He's never fallen out and is a pro at getting in and out. I hated the crib and so did DS. We coslept until he was 9 months old. There was never enough room for him in the crib. He was tall enough for his nipples to be level with the rail, so that's when you're supposed to move them anyway.

My friend switched her 12 month old to a mattress in their room and transitioned him to his own room at 15 months.

  • I am going to try to wait until DS starts trying to climb out of his crib. If you do move DD out of her crib, I suggest putting a mattress right on the floor. That way, if she falls off, she can't get hurt.

  • Why is that a flame-able question??

I don't think so at all - we transitioned from bedsharing to kiddo sleeping on a futon in his room around that age.  It went very well.

  • I want DD "trapped" in the crib as long as possible but once she can crawl out we'll switch her right away and babyproof her room.  But every kid is different. If your kid can do it at 15 months then i don't see a reason not to.
