Do you call pedi every time LO has a fever?

DS has has a fever since early last night (101.1 last night) and he hasn't really reacted to the Tylenol (102.6 this morning).  Just wondering if I should call the pedi or just let the fever do its job and run its course.  He has no other symptoms that I know of except for feeling tired and crummy as expected.

Re: Do you call pedi every time LO has a fever?

  • If its in the 100s/101s with no other symptoms, I treat with Motrin for a day or so and see how she does (per our nurse line suggestion). If its a high fever, or she's showing other symptoms with it, I call to see what they would have me do.

Hope your DS is feeling better soon.

  • I'd call because it seems like it is getting higher. But I have been told that anything under 103 is ok if it can be brought down with tylenol and doesn't last longer than 24 hours. Babies get fevers much more frequently than adults & they tend to be higher as well.

  • I usually give it 24 hours to go away, unless its really high.

  • If it's not really high and there are no other symptoms, I don't call. I'm not paying a copay to hear my LO may be getting a virus that's going around and to take motrin.

  • Our criteria are, does it go down with tylenol and what other symptoms are there and how high is the fever.  We were told that it doesn't matter what the temperature is, if you can't get it to come down with tylenol you bring her in.

  • We took DD to the ER in the middle of the night once.  It ended up being a virus.  The ER told us we could alternate Motrin and Tylenol ever 4 hours to bring the fever down.  The dosage depends on the LO, of course.
  • No.  Rarely.  My pedi likes the fever to remain untreated unless LO is miserable up to 103.  If there are other persistent symptoms, then yes.

  • I usually don't.  I also use Motrin instead of Tylenol.
