May 2011 Moms

Had an U/S today.

We got to see the little heart beating. I couldn't help but laugh. It was like the baby was waving at us. I am so happy.

I have been having some spotting though, so the doctor prescribed some vaginal tablets that I will have to use. I am not sure what it is. And she wants me to just rest and not do anything.

I was really proud of myself though because this doctor didn't speak English and we conducted the entire exam in German. I understood everything. I have been worrying about giving birth here because of the language barrier but I am starting to think it will be ok. Big Smile

  • Sounds like the appointment went great! Hopefully the meds and rest will help with the spotting.

  • glad to hear about language not being an issue.

we're PCSing to Germany in November, and I'm a little hesitant because we're going to a small NATO base and I'll have to use a German doctor and midwife (i'm actually really excited about the midwife and birthing in Germany because they respect birth plans and natural labor more than OBs in the states do) but have been nervous about language being an issue.

hey, i'm in germany too :- ) i've lived here for years so am not concerned about the language barriers, but i sometimes get the feeling that things here are done differently than in the States. did your OB here give you prenatal vitamins? I've heard they generally don't and only give you specific supplements (like iron) if your bloodwork shows you need it. My first appt isn't until 7w0d, and i don't know whether to expect an u/s or not...

Hey Kelly. When I told my doctor here that I we were TTC she told me to buy some prenatal vitamins while I was in the USA. So I did that. Things are done very differently here. Here is a good link. I don't want to get your hopes up, but I would expect to have an u/s done. They have done two on me so far and I am only 6w6d. How far along are you now? What area of Germany are you in?

Hi. I am not sure what PCSing is but I am guessing that it is something with the military. Am I close? Anyway, it is done very differently here. I don't have a single doctor, I have an office that I go to and see whoever is available. I found this office online, they have an English translation of their website so I thought that was a good sign. The two I have seen before this both spoke English very well, it was just the lady today who didn't. I wouldn't be too nervous because most of the doctors do speak English. When you go into labor you just go to which ever hospital you have pre-selected and whoever is on shift at the time delivers your baby. That is the one that I am nervous about speaking English. It's kind of a crap shoot. I am in an area that has a lot of American Expats so it was easy to find an English speaking doctor.

What area of Germany will you be in?

Oh also, here is a good link.

  • you're right. it's military. (permanent change of station).

we're going to be in Geilenkirchen. it's a NATO base, so there are people from 16 different countries there. only 600-ish american are stationed there, and i think a larger candian presence.

it will be an interesting and exciting adjustment!

(where are you at in germany?)

  • Good luck with your move. I love it here.

I am in northern Bavaria, near Nurnberg. If you come for the xmas market we should meet up and drink alcohol free Gluhwein together.

    Same for you Kelly.
