National Guard & tri-care?

My DH is in the KY National Guard. We recently found out we can get on tri-care insurance for me and baby and then I don't have to go back to work. (having a hard time with going back). I am wondering how good the coverage is if anyone knows? We are currently on humana and we had 80/20 coverage. Also, are there only certain places you can go or any doctor?

Re: National Guard & tri-care?

  • TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium-based health plan available worldwide to Selected Reserve members of the Ready Reserve (and their families) who are not eligible for or enrolled in the Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program (as defined in Chapter 89 of Title 5 U.S.C) or currently covered under FEHB, either under their own eligibility or through a family member.

Purchasing TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) ia a 2-step process.

    Step 1: Qualify
Follow these steps to qualify for TRS:

    Step 2: Purchase
You may purchase the plan at any time throughout the year, there are no tiers or open seasons. Mail or fax your completed Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form (DD Form 2896-1) along with the first month's premium payment to your regional contractor within the specified deadline.

    Plan Overview
When enrolled in TRICARE Reserve Select, you may visit any TRICARE-authorized provider, network or non-network.  Care at military treatment facilities is on a space-available basis only. You do not need a referral for any type of care but some services may require prior authorization.

The type of provider you see determines how much you'll pay out-of-pocket. If you're visiting a network provider, you'll pay less out of pocket and the provider will file claims for you.

    Out-of-Pocket Costs
TRICARE Reserve Select premium rates are established annually on an calendar year basis. You are required to pay the monthly premiums if you decide to enroll in TRICARE Reserve Select. The 2010 monthly premiums are:

    • TRS Member-Only coverage: $49.62 per month.
    • TRS Member-and-Family coverage: $197.65 per month.

After you've met an annual deductible, you're responsible to pay a cost-share (or percentage). Here's a quick snapshot of TRICARE Reserve Select costs:

    Type of Provider

    Outpatient Cost Share

    Inpatient Cost Share

    Network Providers

    15% of the negotiated rate

$16.30 per day ($25 minimum charge)

    Non-Network Providers

20% of the TRICARE allowable charge

$16.30 per day ($25 minimum charge)

Is TRICARE Reserve Select Right for You?
TRICARE Reserve Select is a great option for you and your family if you are:

    • a member of the Selected Reserves of the Ready Reserve,
    • not on active duty orders or covered by the Transitional Assistance Management Program, and
    • not eligible for or enrolled in the FEHB,

The plan provides comprehensive health care coverage when you're not activated and covered by active duty TRICARE benefits. And, because you can see any provider, you don't have to change providers if you already have one. For more information, download a copy of the TRICARE Reserve Select Flyer.

  • Here is the crux of TRS, it works just like TRICARE Standard.  You can only go to a doctor who takes TRICARE.  But as long as they do, you are good to go.

  • Loading the player...
  • Tricare Southern Region uses Humana...so you would most likely be able to keep your same providers.
  • Thanks so much!  Great to hear! Going to ask my ds's pedi if they accept it.
