1st Trimester

With a bunch of early appointments, how do u hide pregnancy?

Today I had an early OB/GYN appointment as a result of an early bleeding episode last week.  I am only 4 weeks, 6 days.  I had anticipated being out of the office only 3 hours.  Turns out the dr. wanted me to do an emergency ultrasound and to do bloodwork.  Well, I had to call my boss & tell him that I would be out probably 6 hours instead of 3.  Then, I had to tell him that I have a follow-up visit scheduled for next week.  The doctor also wants me to do another u/s in 3 weeks and mentioned that there's a possibility I may need to have bloodwork done once a week.  These are SO MANY APPOINTMENTS!

With my first pregnancy, everything went so smoothly and it was the 2nd trimester before I started showing.  This time, I have all these appointments and my stomach is bloated like I'm almost in the 2nd trimester when I'm only 4 wks 6 days.  Maybe I'm self-conscious but at least 2 colleagues have already given me a bump check.  If you've had to miss work once weekly or more b/c of your pregnancy whether as a result of appointments or sickness, how were you able to hide your pregnancy?

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  I lost my first baby, so we are keeping this pregnancy a secret..well, trying to!  I even have to take the 45 minute drive to my OB just to get bloodwork done!  I'm on some meds for the pregnancy that makes me woozy so my husband is taking me,and its getting a little suspicious!  ;)  Hopefully we can stay on the down low until we're ready to tell!  Good Luck!!

  • If I were worried about missing so much work for appointment, I would probably just tell my boss. I would explain to them BTW I am ku, I don't intend on missing a lot of time, but right now some things are coming up and i want to be upfront with you".

    But thats just me.

  • I went ahead and told my immediate supervisor right away.  I have many frequent appointments.

  • I feel the same way!  I'm not sure how I'll be able to keep it quiet either.  I'm worried about hiding the reason for appointments and when I start having morning sickness.  I don't want my work to know until I'm out of the woods of possible miscarriage.
  • Good question.  I'm in the same boat and I do NOT want to tell my boss yet.

  • After we had a good appointment yesterday at 6w1d, I opted to tell my supervisor, especially since I have two appointments in the next six weeks (to go with the three or four I've had since we started TTC).

It was funny, when I fessed up, she was like, "I knew it! With all your bloodwork and doctors appointments, I was curious if you guys were trying."

Apparently, my never taking time off work bit me this time...when she saw me missing some time or coming in late, she figured something was up.

ETA: When I spoke to her, I simply told her I'd feel more comfortable if she didn't say anything to my coworkers until we were later in the process. I just figured since my PG would impact my schedule and hers in a way, it was best she have all the information necessary.

  • I told my supervisor pretty early into the pregnancy because of the frequent appointments. She is respecting my wish to keep it a secret from the rest of the office until I am ready to let everyone know.

  • I told my boss at five weeks because I have weekly ultrasounds.

Ok - SIX HOURS for an ultrasound and bloodwork? Even when I've had to get more than that done in one appointment, it never takes three hours.

  • I told my boss right away.... I'm a teacher, and I didn't want to be in the classroom and feel sick, but not have anyone that I can turn to. Plus, she's probably the most understanding boss a person can have.

I would probably tell your boss. It might work out to your benefit.

    Good Luck!

  • I told my boss early on, too, because I've taken ... no sick days in the past year I've been in my current office.  Needless to say, a sudden influx of doctor's appointments would have been very apparent since he has to approve the sick leave for all of them.

If you can trust your boss not to spread it around the office and to be supportive if, heaven forbid, something were to go wrong, it would probably be easier simply to explain why you need so much time off.

That said, the guys I work with every day didn't notice a darn thing -- I totally caught them by surprise when I told them last week.  And that's despite me telling them that I was going to the doctor, just not what it was for, bless their hearts.  (My boss is long-distance, so I only see him every week or every other week.)

When it's all said and done, what matters most is your relationships with other people; without good friends and family, what's the point?
