Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

ncbelle and tarebear98 (question about delayed speech)

You both mentioned in the Toddler Kisses post that your kids have speech issues/delayed speech...what exactly does that mean?  My DS hasn't said any words yet, and he's not using mama or dada discriminately, and it seems like most 1 year olds are at least trying to say words like "daw" for dog, etc. so I'm just wondering if he's got delayed speech too, or if it's too early to tell?

WAY too early to tell.  he's just 12 months!  my son is almost 19 months and still only saying Dada ..and that is still hit or miss.  he's been in speech therapy for about a month.  at his 16m appt. my pedi told me to call them and get the ball rolling for services b/c it takes a while.

our Early Intervention therapist said that DS's motor skills are in the 24m range and that is probably the reason he isn't speaking.  he is spending all his energy on jumping, climbing and figuring out how to take apart our whole house!  :)

I know it's frustrating but you have a few months to go before you should be concerned. just keep reading to him and talking all day long and before long you could have a chatter box on your hands!

I agree with PP.  It's way to early to tell.  We were told the same thing about motor skills v. verbal skills by our pedi.  DS is nearly 2 now and still has a fairly limited vocabulary.  The pedi (and a speech path friend) have assured us that this will all balance out eventually.

  • My kid was diagnosed with a severe expressive language impairment at 12 months.  Two speech-language pathologists put her expressive skills at the 3-6 month range.  She coos but does not babble with consonants.

  • 12 months is really early to be concerned about that. My ds was just put in early intervention with a speech delay at 19 months. The board of dd here doesn't even like to evaluate kids for speech until they are 18 months.
  • Ok thanks I'll try not to worry but it's hard when all my friends' babies seems to be saying a couple words at 1 year old or are at least babbling up a storm.  My DH doesn't talk much to DS, he plays with him in silence and that has always bothered me, I've tried to get him to talk more but DH is just a quiet guy.  I try hard to read books to DS every day but he just won't sit still, so I worry that we're not talking enough to him.

  • Is he just starting to walk? My son only said dada at around a year. But he was working on walking at that point. Kids tend to only work on one thing at a time be it a large moter skill or small or speaking. My son is in Speech now at 21 months cause at 19 months when he was checked he did not even say 10 words. Even now though it is hard for him to even do speech cause you can't make a child talk. You can also try doing sign language with your child and saying the word when they sign it. That has helped my DS.

  • It's totally normal to have no words at 12 months or even 15 months.  Kiddo is 21 months and has no words and really doesn't use any sounds but "da".

Try not to worry - most kids will have a word explosion between 15 and 18 months ;-)

  • No I would definitely not worry yet. 12 months is way too young to worry. At 10 months DS said his first word "ball" and that has been it ever since. Even though I say he is speech delayed I am still not concerned...he will talk when he is ready. He turns 2 next month and he is just now starting to pick up more words. I am still most likely going to put him in speech therapy because I see no harm in being proactive.

And ditto ncbelle most toddlers definitely have a word explosion but our pedi told us it was closer to 2. And that is proving true for us.

  • Jumping in - WAY too early to be concerned IMO.  Focus more on the babbling - does he babble with different sounds?  At 12 months - DS babbled mamama, dadada, and babbaba.  That was it and the pedi said it was totally normal.  At 15 months, he said mama and dada clearly as well as uh oh and ball.  That was it.  Pedi said that exactly on track.  Now at 18 months, we haven't had his 18 month appt yet but at the 15 month, they said they would want to see 10 words.  In the last month, he's got about 10-15 words.  (Not all perfect sounding but words nevertheless).  He also does a few signs (more, all done) which is helpful.

At 12 months - what about recpeptive language? If you ask him to go get his shoes or go get a ball, does he do it?  If so, I think it's defintely NOT time to worry.

Yes he can follow simple commands like "throw the ball" or "give that to mommy" and he says mama, dada and baba even though he doesn't apply mama and dada to me or DH so I guess I won't worry for now...thanks!
