tummy time

Does everyone's LO hate tummy time?  I wait until I know that she's in a good mood because then I know I can get a few more minutes of it out of her, but it still doesn't last long because I can't take hearing her so frustrated and upset.  How long do you do it for?  What exactly should she be accomplishing?  Maybe she's still too young, but I don't feel like she accomplishes much besides hating me for making her do it.

Re: tummy time

  • Mari hated and still currently hates tummy time. I think you either get a kid who tolerates it, or one who doesn't. I used to just try to get her usin her neck muscles as often as possible by going chestto chest with her with me on my back. Obviously it can't be that big a deal because even though Mari never did TT, she holds her head fine, sits without support and even scoots a bit.

  • I agree with what Cristina said.  It doesn't have to be on the floor.  You can hold her on your chest.  She might be happier that way.  My Caroline didn't get a huge amount of tummy time, but her back and neck muscles still strengthened up nicely.  You can also get down on the floor with her to help entertain her.
  • Phoebe loves tummy time.  She would rather I let her sleep on her belly too.  I think it just depends on the baby.  She hates not getting constant attention though so I have to lay on the floor with her.  I'm started doing a lot of her tummy time laying on the couch chest to chest because she loves getting to "talk" to me during it.

  • Reese typically doesn't mind it.  However, she doesn't really do what she is "supposed" to do when we put her on the floor.  When we lay her down, she just lays her head down & talks & then eventually falls asleep.  I try to do tummy time at the beginning of her wakefulness, but it still happens.  I try getting down there with toys/mirrors/etc., but this girl is lazy. :)  We do tummy time chest to chest & she will hold her head up & look around.  She also gets practice with her neck muscles in the Moby.

When we had our 2 month visit, the pedi laid her on her belly to check her muscles, & she did what she does at home--nothing.  So, he picked her up & held her by her belly & she lifted her head & looked around.  He said she has "great tone", so I'm not too concerned at this point, but we keep trying.

  • G hates tummy time, too.  He'll only tolerate it for a few minutes at a time, so I try to do it several times a day.  I try to put him down when he's in a good mood.  He pretty much ignores the toys and mirror still, but he'll talk to me or the dogs for a couple of minutes.
  • I propped Briley up on the couch on the boppy, and I sat on the floor, so we were eye level. She liked it better that way.
  • at first A didnt like it, but now loves it. He sleeps on his belly too.
