Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler eating habits

Is it normal for him to love something for weeks and then decide he hates it and refuse to eat it?

H has had oatmeal with apples every morning for 5 months now and this morning he is acting like it''s poison.  I tasted it and it's like it always is.

How do you know they are getting enough?  Toddlers will eat when they are hungry right?  H has never been big on giving hunger cues.

  • Alex has done that with Green beans, peas and watermelon. He went on a 2 week kick of not waiting any watermelon and he is now just starting to eat it again. I think its just a phase.

I would think if they are that hungary they will eat what is in front of them. But that is just my guess. Good Luck

  • Sure! I can't eat the same thing every day. DS used to get a waffle and banana every morning then didn't want the banana at all. Went on for about a month and now he likes it again. I switch out toast with pb&j and yogurt with applesauce and cereal. I give him a different choice of fruit each morning.

DS eats about five times a day. I don't remember how old your LO is. DS asks for certain foods when he's hungry now: toast, cereal, apple, pear, banana, cottage cheese, and yogurt. He really likes fruits and dairy!

  • the other day my babies screamed like crazy when i offered them grilled cheese...cheese and bread!  they normally love cheese and bread.  So i think its normal for them to have moods when they dont want a certain food (or simply times where they are not as hungry).

My kids will lift their high chair trays and throw it on the floor when they are done...so I do think they stop when they are full.   I wish they would just stop eating though instead of making a huge mess!

  • There's a bigger list of foods ds won't eat than ones he will.   He's a great snacker, but for actual meals, not so much.  He used to be a good veggie eater, and now he spits everything out.  Last night, I thought sure he'd eat some corn, but nope.  He wanted nothing to do with it.  It's so frustrating.  He does like most breakfast foods though, so atleast I know he's getting one solid meal a day.

  • I never know what DS is going to like from meal to the next. He seems to pick one item that he will eat each time and it is totally random.  He will gobble up something one day and reject it the next.

I am just trying to trust that he is getting enough, since he gains weight and looks healthy.  I recently read that you can expect a toddler to eat one full meal a day and they may just eat a tiny bit at the other two.

  • I've noticed that my previously not picky baby refuses to eat things at home that she has at daycare!  I try to offer a good variety at each meal to make sure she is getting her nutrients.
