Books are always great. Get a small collection of your favorite children's books. Also, things that people go through like baby lotion, formula (if this applies), diapers (again if this applies) are nice to get so mom doesn't have to run to the store if they run out. A few good meals is also nice.
I will be an evil vulture. If you are looking at books check out my site... they have idividual books for as low at $4 and then we have baby's first sets/library collections.
I would definitely recommend getting one of those calendars that have stickers for different significant events in LO's first year. I got one and LOVED it because it was so easy to access and write down when DS did new things (first smile, first tooth, etc.). I just kept it in our kitchen and now have a great place that has all the "firsts" written down. You can get them at card stores.
Re: Best gifts for newborn??
LOL... I'm biased because I sell them but BOOKS!
I love giving baby books, board books... etc. They last longer than clothes and they give new parents something fun to do with baby.
I agree with books. When I was working and we would have baby showers for people I was always in charge of a group gift of books.
Food for the new parents is also a good idea (either a meal or gift cards).
I tend to shy away from clothes and blankets becasue you have no idea what they have or need.
Books Books Books!
Bunny's current favorite is called Skeleton Hiccups. I think he likes my "hiccup" sound :-)
I like to give monogrammed diaper covers for little girls. This one is adorable and only $16:

I also like to give these birth blocks, especially if it's a close friend or family member:

Books are another great gift. Karen Katz writes great baby board books that make awesome gifts:

My FAVORITE bedtime book
a GREAT parenting book (I like it because it tells you HOW to play with your little one not just that you should play with them.)
