18 month old screaming at night, sleeping fine at day

My son is now screaming his head off. He goes to bed at 8 pm. He has been waking at midnight and DH takes him into bed with us. Last night I said no. He slept with DH on the couch midnight-1:30. I walked with him and put him in his crib around 2:00 and sat next to the crib till 3:30. As soon as I left, he started whimpering and sleepily crying, but I didn't go back in. I figured he's physically fine. No fever. Maybe a sore throat, but I don't know if that's from the crying or not, He has been coughing. (My paranoid mom voice says "Whooping Cough". Should I take him to the doc? 

 Or is this just a phase and Daddy's been spoiling him by taking him to bed with us? He doesn't stop crying immediately when we put him in bed with us either.
