Hospital or Birthing Center

I have had 3 kids before and have just found out I am pregnant with my 4th.  All of my other kids have been born in a hospital and I was considering a birthing center this time. I heard they were also about half the price as a hospital which would be great.  We also just moved to a different state so I don't have a regular OBGYN anymore.  Anyone with some pros and cons of each?  What is your story?

Re: Hospital or Birthing Center

  • Were you happy with your hospital experiences, or are you looking for something different?  A birth center typically does not have access to anesthesia, and you would have to transfer to the hospital if something went wrong.  It is typically a more "serene" environment and you can go home just a few hours after the birth.  Birth center births are often attended by midwives.

How close is the nearest birth center to you?  The closest one to us is an hour away, and their transfer hospital is 10 minutes from our house but over an hour from them.  We decided to have a home birth in part because I did not want to spend an hour in the car during labor and we would actually be much closer to the hospital in case of emergency.

  • I am actually only about 5 min away from one, and it is right by the hospital.  I was happy with the hospital.  Just wanted to know what people think is better.  Not sure if I like the idea of what you described though lol.  If there is a chance I want anesthesia then I want to be able to get some lol.

  • The place I want to use is a "Birthing Inn" that is attached to the hospital. Everything is available there (anethesia, doctors on call, etc). If it was seperate from the hospital, I probably wouldn't do it...you just never know what might happen

  • It also depends on your pregnancy.  Our local birthing center won't take high-risk pregnancies, their intensive care unit isn't fully equipped like the hospital's.  If something bad happens, they have to get an ambulance and transfer the baby across the street to the hospital.
