how do babies learn how to sit? like do they lie on their backs and then one day decide to sit up? i can understand how a baby could mantain a sitting position, but how does s/he GET to the sitting position?

Most babies I've seen learn to get into the sitting position usually go on their belly, get into a crawl position and then lean back

DS learned to sit first. He just started sitting up from laying down on his own around 9 months. He would be laying down, get on his hands and knees, and then flop his legs around so he was sitting. Now he can get into this position from a million other positions. But the pp is right, at first it was kind of falling into the sitting position from the crawling position.
