I have to have a c-section when we have another child, but I don't want to go in on a certain day. I want to go into labor naturally.
Can OBs do planned c-sections when you go into labor on your own (assuming you go into labor naturally?) I see the need for a c-section in my case, but I don't want to force my child to come into this world earlier than he/she is ready to come.
Also, does anyone use a glass coffee table in their home? We had to put ours in the garage because DS figured out a way to remove the adhesive from the table and leave the edges exposed. How do you guys protect your LOs from a glass coffee table, is that possible?
Re: Question C-Section Mamas & Coffee Table Users
Your subject so intrigued me...these two questions don't go together at all! (which I'm sure you know)
I don't have a coffee table like that and I didn't have a c-section. I'm no help. I did have a friend who knew she had to have a c-section and her doctor scheduled it for 40w2d and if she had gone into labor naturally, she would have had an emergency c-section. That leads me to believe, at least in her case, that anything other than her scheduled time would have been an "emergency." I'm not sure though, like I said, I'm of no help.
ROFL, about the subject line, I didn't want to double post.
I would ask your OB about the c/s issue, each OB is different. I had an emergency c/s with my first and a planned c/s with my second. My OB did not want me going into labor and E was born just 3 days prior to my due date.
As far as the coffee table goes, we don't have a glass one we have a wood one so I don't have those problems.
I've wondered that before as well, since I had a c-section after going into labor the first time.
I haven't asked yet, but I think planned c-sections are safer in general. If they could predict who'd need a c-section without experiencing a trial labor, they'd plan them all. Your uterus contracting can be a significant risk to the baby as it's being extracted, so it's preferable that you not be contracting during the surgery.
I've thought about waiting until I go into labor for the next one, but I decided that since DS came the day before his due date, that my babies follow the rules. lol. I'll probably push for a planned section very close to my due date (i.e. not at 38 weeks or something), so we know the baby is ready.
With my DS1, I had a c/s scheduled for 39w2d. He was breech. I ended up going into labor naturally at 38w1d. It was still considered "scheduled." I think entering labor though definitely was harder on DS...turned out he had the cord around his neck 3 times...so with each contraction, he was being choked more and more. When I got to the hospital, we were in the OR in less than 45 minutes...but DS still only scored a 4 on his first apgar.
Hoping for a VBAC this time.
I haven't had a c/s but I'm a nurse practitioner in an OB/GYN office (and a former L&D nurse), so I can tell you what our group would do. We have 3 Dr's, the oldest would try to schedule you at 38 weeks, the other 2 would be more willing to work with you and schedule between 39-40 weeks. But they would all schedule you, they don't want you to go into labor on your own and if you come in the middle of the night it turns into an emergency which usually turns into a cluster.
Don't have a glass coffee table we had a wooden one, but it's getting ready to go to the garage b/c DS' favorite game is to climb up on it and dance around.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I had an emergency c section with DS and I am due January 2nd. I was thinking about a VBAc, but after talking to the doctor who delivered DS, he thinks in my case the c section is safer and an attempted VBAC would probably end in a c section anyway. They want to schedule it for 39 weeks. I don't like the idea of bringing him into the world early, either. What if our due date is off, and he really needed like 2 more weeks to cook? Earlier in my pregnancy, one of the doctors I met with said that it is fine to schedule a c section on your due date and if you go into labor naturally before that, you can try for a VBAC but then have a c section if needed. He said a lot of people do that. But my doctor said that your uterus really can rupture during labor, not just during pushing. So as soon as you go into labor, you still have that small risk.
I would like to go into labor and then have the c section that day, but the idea of my uterus rupturing is a little scarier for me, because i have low platelet count, which means my blood doesn't clot well and I probably have more of a risk of bleeding to death than a normal person. Plus, it is kind of nice to know when the surgery will be so we can have family fly in to help take care of DS while we're in the hospital. My doctor said my pelvis is also small and hard to push a baby through.
edited because I remembered what the doctor really said.
Normally with c/s they do not want you to go on your own because if you go into full blown labor in themiddle of the night they might have issues with getting the proper staff there in time for the OR.
I was scheduled for my 1st c/s but didn't make to the scheduled date and it was a saturday night and it was crazy how they were scrabbling around trying to find all the people needed. My 2nd csection, I made it to my scheduled date it was so much more calm,
You can ask the dr to not schedule until very close to your date but i have found most dr's with c section want them done by 39 weeks
My doctor is letting me wait and see. I told her I wasn't sure about VBAC or c-section, but I didn't want anything done before 40 weeks. She was OK with it and said it is better to not get too hung up on wanting one or the other, in case plans had to change..
She said scheduling a c-section can be scary, because you are scheduling a surgery and it freaks a lot of women out. She said if I wanted a VBAC, we could try for it, but I could change my call at any time and ask for the surgery, up to and including if I was in labor.
Really she said it depended upon my pregnancy - as an example, if at 38 weeks, I was starting to dilate and things looked good, why not try for VBAC, whereas if the baby was breech, then we might go ahead and schedule one.
I really like her approach.
Im an OB sonographer, and just from what I hear doctors talking about...it seems that if you "need" a section, they will most likely want to schedule you for it because its easier to do that than it is for you to go into natural labor, get here, and there not be a room.
If you dont mind me asking, why do you need a section this time? Different reasons for C-sections are based on why you need one...sometimes its too dangerous for you to go into labor on your own, so they will schedule it earlier
Sorry for the delayed response. I had a 4th deg. tear on the first go-round, and due to a possible re-tear of the area because the skin is fragile, it is highly recommended I have a c-section.
Luckily I didn't have any sphincter issues after the first time, so I don't want to chance it, I have confirmed this with two doctors and in passing spoke with an OT.
