Umbilical Hernia?

DS is a 31 weeker (actual due date was yesterday) and has been home since 35 weeks doing well. Like many of your LOs, he often strains and grunts, resulting in a lot of intra-abdominal pressure. I think he is developing an umbilical hernia as a result of the pressure, and I'm wondering what the prognosis is on this condition. Do they self-correct, or is surgery necessary? We're seeing the pediatrician next week, but I was hoping to hear from other moms whose LOs have gone through this.

Some self -correct others do not. Andrew is 20 months actual (17  adjusted) and he still has one...if it doesn't go away after about 3 years ish surgery is considered, I'm told for aesthetic reasons.

DS had one as well. it has mostly gone away. they would have waited for quite awhile (2-3 years) before surgery.

DD had one and it went away.  I can't remember when. but it was before 6 months actual.

my son developed one once he came home....and it is now pretty much back to normal after 7 weeks.

My LO has one that is slowly going away (at 4 months actual).  Our pedi recommended we get it evaluated at 1 year for possible surgery if it hasn't gone down by then.  But he said something like 90% resolve on their own.

It makes me laugh when people ask if he has an "outie"...that's one huge outie!!!

Ds had a small one. His self corrected at some point during the first year (can't remember when exactly).
