High-Risk Pregnancy

GD questions

I've been on insulin since Monday night and my fasting numbers have been higher than ever (118, 109 and 118).  I called yesterday and they said to give it until Monday before deciding to change the dosage.

But here's my question.  I wake up much hungrier than usual (sometimes even wanting a snack in the middle of the night) even though I snack before bed (cheese and crackers).  Is it possible that my body is overcompensating for too low BSL?  Sometimes I'm even sort of shaky (not the freezing chills I had last week).  And then I still have to wait 30 min -1 hour before eating as I have to take my thyroid medicine and can't eat right away.

My other question is:  how long did it take you to be scheduled with a nutritionist?  I found out last Monday that I failed the 3 hour GTT and finally got a call yesterday to schedule a meeting with the nutritionist on next Monday.  It took 11 days to get results to my GTT, and I've been trying to eat a GD diet since 8/31 but I need help from a nutritionist.  I see some websites that say not to count veggies, then others say do if it's over 2 servings at a time, then others that say only if they're cooked.  It's confusing and just like other pregnancy things where each OB may be different, I just want to do what the one nutritionist tells me!  I will have tested 25 days before getting to meet with the nutritionist!

Re: GD questions

  • Wow, that's frustrating waiting that long on nutritionist. I waited 2 weeks and had to fight to see her (no referral from doc at all!).

Are you keeping a food log for him/her? That should also help pin point what is going on with your fasting number. It could be that you are just reactive to certain foods. And a food a log is a great way to see which ones. My first suggestion would be to try a different night snack. Maybe grapes and crackers instead. (Fruit sugar instead of crackers). My numbers tend to do well with a small serving of ice cream and nuts. It's all in what you react to.

Bad news? Fasting numbers are the hardest to control. You may end up having to increase your insulin.

The other possibility is dawn effect. See https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dawn-effect/AN01213

Sorry for the long winded post!

  • Wow I'd be frustrated too!  I had to meet with the nutritionist BEFORE they put me on any kinda diet and before any insulin.  I did the diet for about a week and my fasting numbers were slightly high.  They put me on insulin and they stayed the same.  Bumped it up a little and the fasting numbers got higher!  Today was the first time I actually had a fasting number in the 80's I'm now up to 30 units at night.

Now I'm having to deal with my other numbers cause they are flying all over the place its frustrating.

  • I haven't been able to control my fasting #'s either, so they first started me on 10 NPH Insulin.  They told me to give it 2 days and then check in with them if they #'s didn't go down.  They didn't, so last night they increased my dosage by 2 units and today was the first time it was good.

They also said you can get a blood sugar drop from the insulin and you can feel shaky and light-headed.  If that happens, have a half a cup of juice.

My nutritionist told me not to count veggies unless they are starchy like corn, lima beans, peas, etc.

  • I was diagnosed on a Wed- nutritionist by Fri. She only gave me my monitor and now I see the Dr this coming Wed. My mom is type one and all over the place with her numbers, I saw my results and am in the "high" of normal range- and all my numbers that I have taken seem to be in the range I was told was normal. I have noticed my swelling has been down a bit though, kinda frustrating b/c its my first pregnancy and I have no idea what I am doing :)
