Baby Names

Strong boy name....

to go with girly last name. Our last name is Lilley. It's great for a girl, but we want a really strong boy name to go with it. Any ideas? I like traditional names (Andrew, Matthew, Ryan), but DH likes more non traditional names (Xavier, Zane, etc). We cannot decide or agree on anything. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • We have a lot of L's in our last name. I dont know if I want them in the first name too. Thanks for the suggestion. Names are stressing me out. Luckily we still have some time.

  • We will be naming our son Adam James, two strong names imo.  Good luck!

  • Just to clarify--Xavier is not a non-traditional name. It's the name of a saint, and it's older than the hills. People have ben using it for centuries.

I would also advise against Ryan if you're looking for a masculine name. Ryan is quickly becoming unisex.

Names that might help you meet in the middle:

Atticus. An old Latin name, known best because of To Kill a Mockingbird. The Roman -us ending makes it ultra-masculine.

Silas. An underused Biblical name that might appeal to YH's unique taste.

Desmond. Strong and sophisticated; unique, but not "out there."

James. Traditional, but sleek and never boring, thanks to Mr. Bond.

Sullivan. An older name that might appeal to YH if he likes the surname-as-a-first-name trend.

    Miles. Classic, cool, and simple.

Holden. Cool and edgy thanks to The Catcher in the Rye, it also has a solid, traditional vibe.

Phineas. A classic old name with the option of a slick NN (Phin).

Quentin. Tarantino has helped this name bridge the gap between its natural sophistication and his gritty, edgy style.

Reuben. Another underused biblical name that's unique yet classic, and ultra-masculine.

Victor. Another classic old name with the option of a slick NN (Vic, as used in Reservoir Dogs).

I know it falls on the traditional side, but it is one of the first names I think of when someone asks for a "strong" boy name. I love it! I think it would work well with your last name too.

  • I like masculine, one syllable names. James, Zane, Nate, Dean.. and they sound good with Lilley. Have you thought of "modernizing" any of your traditional choices to fit DHs taste?  for example Drew instead of Andrew, or Matteo instead of Matthew?

I'm in the same boat with not being able to agree on ANY boys names with DH. Good luck to you!!

    James, Justin and Adrian.

  • I agree with you that you should stick with a traditional name. The non-traditional ones often sound feminine, IMO, and would not go well with your last name. I like all 3 names you suggested: Andrew, Matthew, and Ryan. I also like Adam.
  • Benjamin Matthew
  • I would define a strong boy name as one that is historically for boys and wouldn't be used on girls what-so-ever. In that vein, Marcus, Augustus, Calvin, Maximilian.

You can't go wrong with one of the very first names!

I agree! Adam is another of my favorite boy names that immediately says "strong" to me.
