Do you let your kids do this?

I don't allow my children to say the following words: stupid, dumb, ugly, idiot, moron, loser, freak, weirdo.  There are more but its basically anything that would be considered mean no matter the context.

My kids are 6 and 4.

  • Yeah, as far as mine knows...those are "bad words" even though they say them in almost all cartoons/movies.  It's not that big of a deal...I'm just trying to teach them to not be a name caller or use words to hurt others.  It's inevitable that they'll hear them and use them in some form or fashion soon enough.

  • Bad words to my kids too.  Mine are 3 and 7.

  • Those are 'bad words' to my 4.5 yo; "stupid" is bad to the point where if he hears it on the radio or TV, he points out that they said a bad word, that we shouldn't say "stupid" blah blah blah.
  • We reinforce those as bad words, too...but it's so hard!  Moron and idiot make regular appearances in Disney movies.  I've heard stupid on many a cartoon, too.

  • We've only encountered stupid or dumb at this point, and we say it's OK to say it about a thing but not about a person, including himself. I would not be OK with him calling anyone any of those other names.

  • I put those words in the same category as curses, words children can't say but they may not correct adults for saying (did that because my niece gets really obnoxious with correcting adults for language and it drives me nuts).

  • Context DEFINITELY matters IMO. "Ugly" is not a bad word unless you're using it to be mean to someone. If DD said, "I dont want to wear this outfit today mommy, it's ugly!" That isnt wrong. She thinks it's ugly. That's her opinion and she's entitled to it.

Some things are stupid and dumb, but at 2 and 5, my kids dont use these words yet.

Weirdo is a term of endearment in our house, so we say it a lot and so do they.

  • Weird doesn't bother me.  DS will say something is weird, but if he said someone is weird is would not be OK.

We are trying to break DS of the word stupid.  He knows it is not appropriate and is constantly trying to test.

  • Considered "bad words" in our house, but it's hard when they're all over cartoons, etc. and when I catch myself saying, "... stupid pen" or something like that.

This. And I am trying to get DH to limit his use of these words too so that we can model good behavior to the 2 and 4 yo.

  • As long as the words aren't being used to be disrespectful to someone, I don't mind them.  I don't think I've heard them say idiot or moron though.

Exactly. It's more about context to me- depends on HOW the word is being said.

This. DD has told me not to say stupid many times, and I tell her it's okay to say about things, not people. I would consider all the other ones bad words for her in any context.
