I can't remember...soft cheese

What is out when it comes to cheese when you are pregnant?  Is laughing cow okay?  I can't remember this from when I was pregnant...its for a friend.  TIA!

Re: I can't remember...soft cheese

  • I think my understanding is that as long as it's made with pasteurized milk, it's OK--so just check the ingredients/label to be sure...

  • As long as the cheese is pasturized, your fine, regardless of soft or hard cheeses. I think soft cheeses are more likely to be unpasturized, but just check the label. I'm almost certain Laughing cow cheese is pasturized....usually its the 'fancy' cheeses that tend to be unpasturized.
  • Any kind of cheese you'd get in an American grocery store is fine.

False. I'm fairly certain you can find it in the specialty cheese section.

  • Laughing Cow is pastuerized.  I dare you to find unpasteurized cheese at an American grocery store...

Yeah, agree w/ the above posters.  Pastuerized cheese of any kind is fine.  My doc specifically mentioned Brie and Feta as no no's.

some kinds of feta are ok, again just check to see if it's pasteurized, the stuff I get is.

Even if you can, it takes 2 seconds to check the label. Out of curiosity I did once at the grocery store that would be the most likely to have some that were from a small local vendor and every last one of them was pasteurized.

I would really only be wary at a farmer's market, simply because there are absolutely no sanitation requirements for the vendor there (if it's in a grocery store they have to meet FDA guidelines, or at least in this state they do), and even then you can ask the people selling if it is or not.

Actually I almost bought Horizon Organic cheese from Kroger Monday but looked at the ingredients first, it includes unpasteurized milk. Also there is no regulation from FDA stating that unpasteurized milk products cannot be sold in grocery stores (farmers markets, etc.), this is regulated by state. FDA only recommends not consuming these products.
