WHY?~Add "y"?

Okay I am sure this has been long talked about before, and I tried my best to look through some old posts to see if there was a similar thread.

I just want to actually know WHY people add ridiculous letters anywhere they choose into a name? Is it to make it more "unique"? Do they not care that their child will have to spell and re-spell their name for the rest of their life? Do you people personally know anyone who has done this and if so, have they said why they did it?

And if any of YOU have done it, I don't mean to be insulting at all. Sure its NMS but to each their own, I honestly just want to know why you chose to do that.

Same goes for very UNIQUE (that's a polite word!) names that are totally off the wall. Like the little girl named CIRCUS (yes, an in the clown and animal show!) that my sister teaches.

Or the name Cadence. It's a cute name. So why did these parents need to butcher it SO badly by adding in letters every which way?:

"Kaydynce"      No joke!

 Thoughts?

I wonder if that book was published recently and only added in those spellings because of the current "trend?"  It just makes people think that the spelling is ok if it is in a baby book!

My sister did it with her DD Jordyn...which I love BTW, even if it's "frowned upon".  My sister and BIL changed the "a" to "y" so that someone reading the name would know it's a girl.  But now she has seen 2 babies with Jordyn as a boys name...kind of defeats the purpose of adding the "y".

  • I think people do it to make a name more "feminine?" I definitely don't get the logic there. Am I missing something? I think it makes it look misspelled.

  • I think some people do this to make it look more girly.  I know a lady who named her daughter Jordyn so that it's the "girl version" of it.  That's the only Y added name that I like because I agree, it looks more feminine.

I agree actually. Don't mind this one at all because to ME it is a way of showing it is a feminine version.
