Preemies

2nd time preemie moms

Did you have another preemie after your first? How many of you due to bicornuate uterus or pre-e for the 2nd time? I am curious how often this happens. It is something that keeps crossing my mind, because I wonder if it would happen to us again. I don't know if we will even try for a second down the road though.

Re: 2nd time preemie moms

  • What did your OB say about the chances of another preemie? Talk to your OB and see what he/she says for you. I don't have experience with either of those conditions, though, so I am not much help myself. But congrats on your baby girl!

  • I had 2 preemies, DD born at 26 weeks and DS born at 35 weeks 3 days. They were both born premature due to pre-eclampsia and IUGR. My doctors told me that my likelihood of having another preemie after DD was about 50-70%, especially how severe it was and how early she was born, but if I did develop pre-e again it would be much milder and later in the pregnancy, which is exactly what happened. I was also closely monitored by a MFM and the second time I knew what to watch for and took extra precautions, like taking baby aspirin, extra folic acid and taking my BP daily. I would talk to your OBGYN and see what they say, since I do not have the uterus issues as well.
  • both living children were preemies and both from pre-e

  • Well, I have a bicornuate uterus and I had pre-e and HELLP the first time around. I am 23 weeks now, and I am being very closely monitored by an MFM. So far everything looks good- BP has been very low every check and my cervix is nice and tight. I guess we will see in the next coming months! If you're curious, I would schedule a pre-pregnancy consult with an MFM. We did that, and she told us 40% chance of pre-e again, but basically gave us the go ahead. Every case is different.

  • My first preemie was born at 21w2d (he's my little angel) and my second preemie was born at 27w3d (almost 4 now!).  Both deliveries were due to spontaneous PTL in the middle of a perfect pregnancy.  For my third pregnancy I was on bedrest for 4 months, did weekly progesterone shots, every other week cervical length tests, etc.  I made it to 40w2d!!

After one preemie I was told the risk of having another preemie was 20-30%.  After my second preemie the risk was 40-70% if I got pregnant again.  I was terrified, but took a totally different route with my third pregnancy and was blessed with a miracle.

    Good luck with your decision.
