Hiya!
As of right now, i use disposables because we do not have our own washer or dryer and we were not in a stable enough financial situation to drop a good deal of money on the CD starter packs.
We are now in a stable financial situation and i am considering doing G diapers with the disposable inserts.
My questions are these:
1)Why do you CD?
2)What brands do you use?
3)If you used 'sposies first, what made you make the switch and are you happy with your choice?
TIA
Re: A couple of Qs for CD mamas from a 'sposie mama
If you're going with gdiapers with disposable inserts it won't be worth it.
1. Cost effectiveness and ecofriendliness
2. All sorts (bumgenius, blueberries, swaddlebees, smartipants, thirsties, etc.)
3. n/a
this is asked a lot, you could search for more answers if you want.
1. I cloth diaper mainly for two reasons, saving money and its better for the environment. its also healthier for my child having natural fibers touching his skin rather than chemicals, he'll potty train quicker b/c CDed kids can feel the wettness so they typically are trained a few months sooner than sposie kids. They are typically healthier kids with very few rashes and other problems.
2. We use a mix of pocket diapers, we use BG (Bum Genius) brand. I have a Kawai pocket that is cheaper and works well. And we use prefolds with covers during the day. for covers I have indian prefolds and gerber prefolds. The gerber ones are cheap to buy and cheaply made, they don't stand up to the indian prefolds but they work good enough. For covers we have 4 prowraps, two ecobums and 2 thirstie duos.
3. We used sposies for the first 10 days while his circ healed and we used vasoline b/c I wasn't schooled on the ability to use flannel liners. We also had a bit of oopsies where I didn't get the laundry done in time so he'd go in a sposie while the diapers were in the wash. But once we figured it out and got into our groove with them we have never looked back! they are so easy and really no work at all!

1) I CD for the cost savings, and because I think it's better for DD not to be exposed to chemicals round the clock. The waste-not and cuteness aspects are just gravy
We have used sposies on a few occasions: when we've had to get rid of stubborn diaper rash, and during the first tri of this pregnancy, when I was too sick to keep up with laundry. We've tried a number of different types of sposies (Target, Huggies, two kinds of Pampers), and in all cases, I've found that cloth just works a lot better for us. So it's easy for me to keep going.
2) I have like 15 different brands in my stash. We started out with Green Mountain Diapers prefolds and PUL covers (mostly Thirsties brand - which I love). Then switched to pocket diapers, including BG 3.0s, FuzziBunz, Blueberry and Swaddlebees. We also have some fitteds, including Bububebe, Sustainablebabyish and Goodmama.
I do agree with pp that you may as well stick with sposies if you are planning to do disposable inserts with your G-diapers. Whether your motivation is cost savings, baby health or the environment, there's just not that much difference between regular sposies, and hybrids with disposable inserts.

1. I like the idea of saving money, not having chemicals against DS's skin, and using something reusable. Plus, they are adorable!
2. I am exclusively using Squeezie Cheeks right now, which is my friend's business. Half of my stash is La-Di-Da pockets/AI2s, and the other half is Fattycakes pockets/AI2s (all with bamboo inserts).
3. My friend who makes them shared the love of cloth with me. I have been interested but didn't take the plunge until I got to try hers on them in person and ask her a ton of questions. We just switched this month, so I'm very new to it. I have been tinkering with my washing routine to figure out what works best with my water/washer/detergent, but so far I am really enjoying using them.
This.
I CD b/c (1) I don't want chemicals next to my baby's skin 24/7; (2) CDing is more eco-friendly; (3) I don't want to be responsible for one ton (more if you have more than one child) of dirty diapers containing human waste in our landfills that will never go away; (4) they are so darn cute; (5) and it is less expensive in the long run. According to Consumer Reports, the average cost of sposies to PLing is $1500-$2000, and I have heard estimates more than that. I will not spend that much on CDs, even if I feed my CD addiction frequently.
We used the hospital sposies while at the hospital, but we started CDing the minute we got home. We started out with GMD prefolds and Thirsties covers. We now use a wide variety of types and brands: pockets, e.g. FB, BG, Blueberries/Swaddlebees, Tots Bots Easy Fit; AIOs e.g. BG organics/elemental; AI2 e.g Grobaby; and fitteds e.g. GM, B4 and Monkey Snuggles for nighttime with wool covers.
1. Multitude of reasons. Cute, eco-friendly, easy, convenient, fun to learn, etc.
2. Thirsties, Bummis, BumGenius, Blueberry, Kawaii, GreenMountainDiapers, monkeysnuggles, Monkey Toe, VeryBaby, and maybe one or 2 I can't think of right now.
3. We use sposies when we travel and if DH is changing diapers. But even he admits that CDs are a great $ saver.
2) I'm new. Right now I have BG 4.0s, Flips, and some gDiapers. I'll be honest, I don't like the gDiapers at all. Actually, if you want to buy them off of me I'll give you a great deal - PM me if you do. I'm just not a fan of them - and I bought the disposal inserts for DH to use, opened it, and we haven't used a single one [:/]
3) I wanted to CD from the beginning; however, we received a TON of disposables at our shower. I was afraid I would be too overwhelmed with a newborn and trying to CD, so we used the disposables for the first couple months. We still do when DH watches him and at night, but I'm hoping to switch completely in the next few weeks.
1 - We switched solely for the money savings. We have 3 boys in diapers and were spending $100+ each month on diapers. Honestly, I don't know one single solitary person IRL that CD's, so I never had exposure to it. I had no idea how easy and not nasty it was, and expected to be using the vinyl pants and gerber prefolds (which I have used on occassion and hated). Had I known now what I did when my oldest was born, we'd have saved $5K+, which really sucks!
Also, I was getting really sick about the cans and cans of diapers we sent to the trash every week, and only heard how diapers take 500 years to biodegrade when I was researching CD's. I have no idea how much poo we've sent out to rot in some landfill. It never bothered me before, but it really started getting to me.
2 - Because we are doing this for the savings, there is no way I could have a stash with the more expensive diapers. I bought Sunbaby diapers off of eBay, and got 40 one size pocket diapers for $156 which is $3.90/ea. Crazy cheap, and I really REALLY love them! I'm planning on using the 40% coupon at Joann's to get some material and make a pattern off of these. That way I can have some cute patterns mixed in with all my colors.
3 - We used sposies for 3+ years, and like I said, switched for money. Environment and better for baby were all bonuses for us (my kids never got diapers rashes with sposies or had any problems). I LOVE that we switched. We've only been doing this for a little over a month, so it's still new. Right now, I'm loving that our garage doesn't reak like poopy diapers. We were running out of room in the garbage can before pick-up each week, but now we always have plenty of room. My kids love the colors and moon my family constantly to show off their bums. They are super soft on little bums.
1.) I wanted something more eco friendly and cost effective. I wanted something that would be healthier for LO and her little bum
2.) I am using the gDiapers
so far I like them and I started on a 22mo old! Ibought a few to try out on her before investing in some for this new LO. I use the gerber prefolds as inserts and the covers from gDiaper (another mom on this board suggested it and I get 12 dipes for 14$ as opposed to 6 dipes for 26$ pretty much a no brainer). DH is a little bit of a harder sell as is daycare so we liked having the option of the inserts being available. So far I like my gCloth and the little gPants. I set up a system with a friend of mine that I would buy all of her gDiapers off of her once her LO grew out of them at less than half price since she dropped like 1k on diapers and inserts for them (SCORE for me
since she doesnt plan on having any more)
3.) We recieved custody of our niece at 4mo old so we didnt think there was another option a friend of mine did cloth diapering and her LO was the same age as DN, I just posted in another post that I was amazed that she had been CDing that whole time and I had no idea! the ease of it was amazing and from then on I decided that I had to do research on my own and that was when I found the g system and thought "hey I could really do this" and yes I am very happy that we made the choice to switch and I am so excited to start from the get go with this LO
1. Cheaper, better for my babies' bums, cuter
2. I have Bumgenius, blueberry, Goodmama, Bububebe, Thirsties, Kawaii, BumJoy, Fuzzibunz, GroBaby/GroVia and more (I like a variety)
3. I used sposies for my DD's first 8 months. I got sick of dropping the cash every week on another box of diapers for her. I LOVE cloth diapers and would never go back to sposies. I won't even use them when traveling anymore. I have exclusively CDed my DS from birth as well.
