Cloth Diapering

Clicky Poll Re: Thirsties diapers

Right now we're using PFs because we have a diaper service.  DS is sleeping longer, but HATES being wet, and will wake up because he pees and doesn't like how it feels.  The diaper change wakes him up enough that he needs to nurse back down.

I'm considering switching to washing my own CDs (I just have to convince DH, lol), and I'm looking for something that's easy, cost effective, washes nicely, and feels dry so DS doesn't wake up from being wet.  I think that if he feels dry he may start STTN!  So I was looking at Thirsties Duos with Stay Dry inserts for nighttime.  WDYT?

Right now I have Thirsties Duo Wraps that I love to cover our PFs, so I already like the brand.

  • I put "they're ok but there are better options." We love the Thirsties, but the BG 3.0's work better for nighttime.

  • I"ve never tried the thirsties duos, but we had a few thristies AI2's for DS when he was younger, and those suckers leaked.  I love Thirsties covers, but their AI2's left a lot to be desired, at least for our LO.  I'd think about buying one to try and/or doing a trial from somewhere like Jillian's Drawers to see what works on your LO.

  • We have one for daytime use that is "ok," but I don't reach for it first.  I definitely wouldn't put it on her for overnight.

We use blueberries and econappies (swaddlebees) for overnight.

  • I tried them in the jillians drawers trial and they weren't my favorite. Maybe you should try out the trial and show your dh how easy it is but if for some reason hea not convinced you won't lose out on money!

I think I'll do a trial if I can.  I talked to him about it and he said "maybe for the next baby."  I think he thinks it's too late in the game (DS is only 4 months!), but I'm going to tell him that we can buy a few at a time, bigger sizes now, so when we do it for baby #2 (and #3, if I get my way and we have a third, lol) we have less to buy, and we're spreading the cost out.

  • I have always used prefolds and fitteds but decided to buy a sampling of pockets to try out. I bought new on sale and like all of the diapers enough to use them.  I got BG 4.0 snap, BG 4.0 aplix, Blueberry snap, Blueberry Aplix, a FuzzyBunz medium, and a Thirsties Duo.

I like the BG Aplix and the FuzzuBunz the best. I probably like the Thirsties Duo the least because it seems the most bulky and it's the only one I have had leak. It's actually the only diaper I have ever had leak when it hasn't been user error.

We also still love our Green Mountain Diaper prefolds and Bububebe but those options are not stay dry.

You are not too late at all. Your LO is just the perfect size for things like BG and Blueberry.

By the way, washing your own diapers is SO easy if you have your own washer.

  • I love love love love them.  The fit well and the inserts are great.  We can use the MF and cotton/hemp together for overnight with no leaks, up to 12-13 hours.  The only way to get that with my BGs is to stuff with a separate hemp insert and while that works - I like that the Duos come with everything you need for overnight.

We also use them during the day and unlike the pp, I find them to be by far the trimmer option compared to BG and FB.  Maybe it's because Sam is kind of long and skinny? I also like the leg gussetts.

The ONLY downside is that they come in two sizes.  FWIW, most people can just skip size one and go right to size 2.

  • I dont' use thirsties pockets but if you want a super cost effective idea how about going out and getting some microfiber fleece and using that as a liner. IT SHOULD wick the moisture away from the skin and make like a barrier for the baby.

Are you opposed to one size? If not really all you need is a stash of them and then maybe some trainers way down the line for your DS. I'm curious how much does a diaper service cost? Maybe if you show him the breakdown of the numbers and how ling your DS really will be in diapers he will be game! Lol

This for me too.  I LOVE my thirsties duo wraps for PFs - but I do NOT like my thirsties duo diaper and I plan on selling it.

We use BG 3.0 (a 4.0 would work as well), with both mf inserts and a bamboo insert to get our little pee factory through the night.

  • I love the covers also. FWIW, my babe is also long and skinny.

It's $20/week, so long term, me washing them is definitely more cost effective, especially if they carry over to more kids down the line.

I'm all for one size, that's part of the reason I was looking at Thirsties because DS is getting to the point where we'd go into size 2, then with baby #2 we'd just need the smaller ones for the nb stage.  I was looking at the BGs, but I thought I'd need to buy more because they have more sizes.  I saw there was a one size 4.0, but everyone seems to recommend the 3.0...

I'm so confused!  More clicky polls will be here soon.

  • I have a very large baby and find that the Thirsties Duo Wraps don't fit him very well at 30 pounds (they say they go up to 40 pounds).  I actually prefer the original Thirsties wraps for my prefolds.  I find that they're larger, I can use them as covers for nighttime diapers (with inserts, of course).
