Snarky and T-TTC

At least my hopes weren't high

So Day 16 of my first clomid cycle.  Never got a + on my OPK but the doctor said to come in anyway just to check things out.  Had an u/s this morning and they saw 30(!) follicles in each ovary, but they were very tiny and none were ready to pop.  They told me to come back in 3 days.

Apparently my body is taking its own sweet time to get things going, but follicles are a good sign, right?  Should I be worried that there are a total of 60 in there?  Does anyone know what is normal?

Re: At least my hopes weren't high

  • I never took clomid, so what I know about it is from reading about it on here. I have never heard of someone having anywhere near that many follies. Normally, it's like half that or less. Are you seeing an OB or an RE? I do know you can have hyperstimulation of the ovaries, but I thought that was pretty rare w/clomid. I think you run into that more w/injectables. I would ask your doctor the signs of hyperstimulation so you know what to look out for.

  • That's good you're seeing an RE. Again, since I don't have personal experience with clomid, I am no expert. I've just never heard of someone having that many follies. Good luck on Tuesday, I hope you get good news on how to proceed.

  • That's gnarly and seems like way too many. But you're not close to O'ing yet, so you can still develop fewer lead follies. I don't know if I would actually have sex/IUI if you end up with two many, esp because this is your first clomid cycle, right? I wouldn't chance the potential for HOM
  • Yeah I definitely don't want to risk HOM.

They put me right on 100 mg of clomid for my first cycle, maybe that was too much.  We'll see what the doctor says on Tuesday though.  I just have no idea what to expect as "normal."

  • I would only worry when they start to become measurable.

  • You can have a lot of follies when they are small, but as they grow and become measurable it is pretty likely you won't have 30 on each ovary.  Are you on only 50mg of clomid? If you are on a higher dose I'd ask for it to be lowered next time if you end up with too many follies to proceed with the IUI.  My RE would not do an IUI if we had more than 3 lead follies.  That is how you end up with high order multiples.  I hope your body starts kicking into gear soon and you O soon!
  • I'm on 100 mg clomid, which I thought was weird because it's my first round.  Maybe next month we'll be at 50.  It will all depend on what we see on Tuesday.

  • I don't remember how many small follies I had, but I only had 1-2 mature follies on clomid (I took 100mg and 50mg). The number of mature follies can also be influenced by the day you start taking the clomid. My understanding is that starting on CD3 can mean more follies, and starting on CD5 can mean fewer, better quality follies.
