Baby Names

What do you think of the name we've chosen?

Hey everyone,

Okay, so let me start by saying that we have already decided on our LO's name, are very happy with our decision, and have absolutely no plans to change the name.

With that said, I'm just curious what to expect when we tell people the name.  It's hard to gauge reactions sometimes.  It seems like for every raised eyebrow there are an equal number of people who excitedly exclaim how beautiful they think the name is.  This could also be because people who know us appreciate how well the name fits our style even if they wouldn't choose it for their own kid.  So, I'm curious what the reaction of total strangers would be to our daughter's name.

Our DD will be Opal Noor (two syllable ethnic LN starting with "F".

DH and I have always loved the name Opal but it's taken on even more personal meaning since we've been to India in recent months during the pregnancy (the name is Sanskrit).  It also happened to work out that DD is due in October and opal is the birthstone.

For the MN, we wanted something Arabic because we live in the Middle East and DD will be born here.  Noor is a common girls' name in this region that means "light" (and DH is a photographer).

Thanks for your honesty!

  • I like them both seperately, but not together. Opal Noor sounds like one word when you say it together. Opalnoor.
  • Opal is very pretty.

  • It's pretty, but I wouldn't necessarily describe it as "classic". I guess I'm splitting hairs though, I actually really like it.
  • it's nms, but it's pretty, and it's not like you randomly picked it out of a hat, you have strong reasons behind first and middle :)

  • I LOVE Opal! It's so pretty and quaint!

And I like your reasons for choosing Noor, even though it's not a name I would use.

I think Opal Noor sounds very pretty and flows very well. Yes

  • I love it.  I love the names on their own and I think the meanings behind them only make them stronger names.
  • I like Noor fine as a MN. I'm not wild about Opal. It does sound a little 80-ish to me. It's not bad; I guess I'm kind of neutral on it. The sound of the name isn't appealing to me; a little awkward-sounding.

  • Thanks for all the input!  It's interesting to me what names survived the "100 year rule" and are now regarded as "classic" and what names just kind of died out.  I believe Opal was on the list every year until 1960 before disappearing into obscurity, but was Top 100 for awhile at the turn of the last century.   For all of you, like me, who love classic names that are also now uncommon, check into the old SSA lists - there are a lot of great forgotten names out there that are still yet to be rediscovered. :)

    Thanks again!

  • I love the name Opal - my best friend in high school's name was Opal.  And Noor reminds me of Queen Noor of Jordan, and she's an amazing, classy woman.  Great job choosing a beautiful name for your daughter!!
