Adoption

International Adoptions

Hi Ladies.

I am new to the boards, and wanted to talk to some other moms who have done international adoptions, or would like to in the future.

Hope to connect with some nice women on here.

Re: International Adoptions

  • I am mom to an almost-6-year-old from Russia.  He came home 3.5 years ago.  Let me know what questions you may have!  Good luck!
  • Hi and welcome!

I just adopted a 7 year-old boy from Peru this summer.  We are home two months, and right in the midst of the transition.  Some days are better than others, but every day's an adventure, and we are so blessed to have our son!

Have you adopted, or are you in the process?

  • Hello Again,

My husband and I have adopted two little girls who are now 4 years old.  We are excited to start the process for internation adoption this year.  My husband works over seas in several other countries.  We live in the U.S however we may consider moving to another country if establishing residency would make the international adoption process smoother.

Does anyone know if it costs less if you are a resident of that country?

  • There are 2 issues with international adoption--the adoption itself, and immigration (the ability to bring the child back into the country).

It's much, much easier to adopt internationally while living in the United States and working with an established and ethical agency, though an established and ethical program.

Are there any countries in which you're interested?

BTW--I have 2 sons adopted from Korea.

  • We switched to international adoption 9 months ago and brought our daughter home 3 weeks ago. We had an unsuccessful try with domestic. TONS of info on my blog if you are interested.

  • My husband and I adopted a beautiful baby boy from Colombia just over a year ago.  It was a ride for sure, but worth every second.  I agree with pp that there are the adoption and the immigration processes to sort through.  We do not live in the states so I cannot comment on whether it is easier for Americans to adopt while living at home or in-country.  I do know that many countries give preference to adoptive families who have heritage from that country so if you or your husband have heritage (even several generations back) with a specific country, it may be worth looking into their requirements.
  • We adopted our son from Russia a few years ago. Things in international adoption change quite a bit from year to year, but I'd love to help if I can.

  • We adopted a 2 year old boy from Russia last year.
