Sleep Help (again, sorry) (and long-ish)

Mari had what I consider to be a pretty decent night last night and I want to just show you her schedule so you can tell me how good or bad it is...

Please let me know if this is the sleeping pattern that is normal for this age and if I should be happy with this or if I should start taking a more hardcore sleep training measure.

September 16, 2010

6:30AM - awake and ate

7:30AM - back to sleep

8:30AM - awake and ate

11:50AM - finally down for a nap (she fought it hardddd)

12:25PM - awake.  Turned on white noise and replace binky but never fell back to sleep.

1:50PM - nap with mommy

4:20PM - ummm... Daddy let Mari and I sleep all that time!! WE feel great!!

6:40PM - attempted nap - no dice

8:05PM - nursed to sleep

9:35PM - crying, replaced binky, asleep again

11:24PM - brought in our room because of bad storms coming through our area in the middle of the night.

3:30AM - woke, ate, back to sleep

6:30AM - woke, ate

7:30AM - back to sleep

8:30AM - awake for the day.

Ok, so I'm glad I wrote this down - I see a pattern with this 6:30 - 8:30 thing.  Is that her morning nap??  What is that?!

Is this pattern normal for a 6 month old?  Is this what I should be expecting?

Re: Sleep Help (again, sorry) (and long-ish)

  • I'm not much help especially since I'm not BFing, my situation is very different.  However, I am also currently tracking eating and sleeping to identify patterns to get C on a schedule.  One of the books that I read suggested doing this for a week or 10 days.  You then take the info and attempt to create a more structured schedule that works for you based on what Mari seems to need.

  • So, do you think I should also write down when she eats during the day even if it's not related to napping?
  • Funny you are talking about this, because I have been tracking G for the past week...here is her schedule, maybe it will help you out a little:

    8:40am- Woke up and ate

    10:30am- 1st Nap

    11:05am- Woke up and ate

    1:00pm- 2nd Nap

    1:40pm- Woke up and ate

    3:15pm- 3rd Nap

    5:40pm- Woke up and ate

    8:30pm- Bedtime

She wakes up a couple of times in the middle of the night for her pacifier but then falls back to sleep. This is basically how her schedule has been going this week give or take depending on what time she wakes up in the morning....

Does Mari need to eat that much during the night? (My Dr says at 4 months she should be able to go 12 hours....I did not believe that but now I do)

G use to get up one time a night for feedings, but when I went to the Keys and left her with my Mom, my Mom was able to drop that feeding...THANK YOU MOM!!!

  • I should stress that this is THIS weeks schedule..Lord knows what next week will bring...nothing is consistent!! Stick out tongue
  • According to the book, you only need to include it if it's how she fell asleep.  I'm tracking it because I want to try to get her feedings on a schedule, too.

In case you think I'm a complete loon for trying to get a 7 week old on a schedule, I have reasons.  Right now I'm just tracking and will be attempting to start the scheduling when we hit the 2 month mark.  Since I have to go back to work at the end of Oct, I want to give my mom a guideline for C's days so that we're both on the same page.  I want to try to keep her days with me and with my mom as consistent as possible.  Also I want to make sure that she naps during the day so that she'll be awake and not cranky when me and Bri get home from work in order to spend quality time with her.

  • This has been K's schedule simce Saturday.

    7am Wake Up/Eat breakfast

    8:30ish Nap #1

    10ish Wake and eat

    1ish Nap #2

    2:30 Wake and eat

5ish Nap #3 - only sometimes she does this.

    7pm - bedtime

There has been two of the five nights that I hve gotten up tp feed her between 12 and 3am.   But  only 1 time per night.

  • This is according to the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book... If she seemed sleepy around 6:40, she probably needs an earlier bedtime. He says bedtime should be between 6 and 8 pm. At the 6:30 am feeding, she should probably be up for the day (sorry!). Briley usually wakes up at 7 and also goes to bed at 7. Her first nap should be around 9 am, the second nap should start between 12 and 2, and then possibly a third around 4ish. Each nap should be at least an hour. Waking once or twice a night to eat is reasonable. HTH!

That's exactly what I thought!!! So, I tried very hard putting her to bed early - at like 7pm, and that's when she was waking all night!!!  So when I talked to my mom, she asked me what I was doing before, and I told her Mari was going to bed at like 8:30ish and her last nap was at 7pm... and my mom told me to try going back to that...  So I tried and luckily had a little bit of a better night last night.

THank you ladies for posting your schedules - I am goign to compare and contrast when I have some real time to sit down and today I started journaling her eating in between too.

    Much love, sistas!

(And Natalee - I don't think you're crazy at all!  from what I hear, FF babies are much easier to schedule than BF babies, so BEST of luck!!! and I totally understand why you're doing it!)
