Can we talk about Introducing Whole Milk...

We have about 2 cans of formula left and I really don't want to buy anymore formula, unless I really need too. So at DD's last pedi appt, we talked about making the big switch to whole milk at a year old. I'm thinking the doctor wants us to wait until her next appointment which is October 8th. I was thinking of starting this weekend with introducing whole milk. How much did you introduce at first? She normally drinks between 6.5 and 7.5 oz for breakfast, 5 oz at lunch and4 oz at dinner &  6.5 to 7.5 oz at bedtime. Recently I've been giving her formula at dinner too in her sippy cup. So would you just mix in 2oz of wm to 5oz of fm? at b, l & dinner, bedtime? or should I only do breakfast and lunch and dinner and not bedtime bottle?  For those who have baby in DC, did you pre-mix before daycare? I premix her formula up now, so I'm thinking it would be easier to make before hand. Thoughts?

Re: Can we talk about Introducing Whole Milk...

  • I have no idea(:  How is that for help.  Sorry but I will be watching for answers to this.  Trevor is not too far behind.

Thanks for asking a great question.  I hope you are feeling better.

  • I intorduced it slowly by mixing like an ounce of WM with 3 or 4 oz of BM and I still gave her a bottle of just BM at bed. Then she was on all whole milk within a couple weeks. The transition actually went pretty smoothly and she took it with no problem.

  • I just randomly gave her a small amount of milk in her sippy a few times so she could taste it - and when it seemed like she liked it and tolerated it well, I just started replacing milk in sippy or bottle for formula.  I think I combined milk and formula maybe 2x but taht was it.

Also - remember you should start reducing the amount she's taking in either formula or milk.  Goal should be 16-24 oz. of dairy a day for a 1+ year old - she doesn't need all those extra bottles/sippies and should be eating her calories.  She should be working towards 3 meals and 2-3 snacks.

    Thanks ladies.

Actually she only gets 3 bottles of milk, and during snack and lunch she gets water in the sippy. This girl eats.

  • With both of our girls we started by replacing 2oz of formula with 2oz of whole milk. We did that for each bottle and gradually added milk and decreased formula. Both of our girls were fine with it. Id say we did that through 1 can of formula then went to all milk.
  • I started switching L today. I gave her 3oz milk & 3 oz formula. She drank it just fine, didn't seem to notice a difference, or just didn't care. Tonight I'll give her an ounce or so of just milk to see how that goes.

My formula can is almost empty so if she drinks the milk, I'll give her half-and-half bottles until the formula gone, probably tomorrow night, then go to all milk. She isn't that picky though, so the transition will probably be much easier for me than for moms of picky babies.

My pedi doesn't want her drinking more than 16 oz of milk a day when she gets to milk only. I will try to do 6 oz in the morning, 4 oz at naptime, and 4 oz at night, unless she seems to really miss having four bottles. Then I'll give her 6oz in the morning, two 3 oz bottles throughout the day, and 3 or 4 oz at night.

I always make her bottles before daycare. I loike knowing exactly what she's getting, and it just seems easier for me to do as I make her morning bottle for home.

Ditto Kathryn.  I gave Aiden a small sippy of just milk to see what he'd do, and he gobbled it down.  We didn't look back!  Why mess with mixing if you don't have to!?

At a year, Aiden would get 3 sippy cups of milk with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  The dinner one was after we'd eaten, and the breakfast was before he'd eaten.  We eliminated the lunch one at 2 years old.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies for the advice. So far so good. We are doing half and half now. I still have a can of formula left, so once it's gone it's gone. Yay for not spending $15 a can.

  • Thanks for this...I have been wondering how to do this. I have given O sips here and there and, unfortunately, he doesn't love it but he LOVES his formula, so I guess I will have to mix for a bit..

15.00  a can? I spend 25.00 a can...will be so glad when that expense is gone!

Yes, I was thankful for a friend who gave me her formula checks. I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a can of formula. Thank you Megcheer.
